| IMPORTANT | | Catastrophe | A Third of Pakistan Is Underwater — But Help Is Coming “We're still coming to grips with the extent of the damage,” Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said. Flooding has killed over 1,100 since June and that number is expected to rise. The crisis has thawed relations with neighboring India, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi says he hopes “for an early restoration of normalcy,” and his government is reportedly considering providing humanitarian aid to its longtime rival. Meanwhile, a $1.1 billion International Monetary Fund bailout — promised in 2019 but shelved during Imran Khan’s government — will be dispensed. Still, Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal estimates the country will need $10 billion to rebuild. (Sources: BBC, DW, Indian Express) |

| | ‘Survival’ | Iraq’s Political Impasse Has Descended Into Deadly Violence At least 30 people have been killed since Monday evening when supporters of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr flooded into the protected Green Zone after he announced he was resigning from politics. Supporters backing al-Sadr have clashed with Iraqi security forces and Iran-backed militias in a battle for control. “The very survival of the state is at stake,” the United Nations mission to Iraq said Tuesday. The country ground to a halt after last October’s election: While al-Sadr carried the largest bloc of votes, no party has been able to form a government, and the cleric’s backers boycotted recent crisis talks. | | | To the Moon | ‘That’s Space Biz’ NASA Chief Says of Artemis Delay Thousands of disappointed would-be rocket watchers in Florida are awaiting word from NASA after the aborted launch of the Artemis moon mission. Officials will meet today to discuss a possible Friday launch after Monday’s attempt was called off at the last minute for a technical issue. “All those things have to work, and you don’t want to light the candle until it’s ready to go,” NASA chief Bill Nelson said. The unmanned rocket is the first stage in a reinvigorated — if long-delayed — space program that will eventually send the first woman and the first astronaut of color to the moon’s surface. | INTRIGUING | | Lapping | Sea Levels Will Rise 30 Inches as Greenland’s Ice Sheet Disappears Low-lying coastal areas across the planet will be inundated by water, researchers behind a study released Monday warn. “Zombie” ice — ice that’s attached to the thicker ice sheet but no longer supported by it — is likely to drop off and melt, and for an ice sheet as enormous as Greenland’s, that spells disaster. Consider it “an ominous prognosis for Greenland’s trajectory through a 21st century of warming,” researchers say. When this will take place depends on how quickly the planet heats up, but glaciologists warn that by 2150 at the latest, all of the sheet’s zombie ice will have melted. (Source: Al Jazeera) |

| | Hot Water | Your Backyard Pool Can’t Hide Anymore, Says French Taxman French authorities have reaped $10 million in taxes since launching an experiment in nine regions last year to crack down on undisclosed swimming pools. Artificial intelligence developed by Google and French consultancy Capgemini cross-references property records with satellite imaging to spot private pools that should have been added to homeowners’ annual tax bills. It isn’t foolproof yet, and authorities say there are issues identifying structures obscured by trees. Still, they expect to be busy as they expand the program nationwide with tweaks to spot illicit extensions, verandas and other construction in backyards full of pandemic lockdown home improvements. | | | True Story? | Frenemy of Con Artist Anna Delvey Takes On Netflix Docudrama “This story is completely true. Except for the parts that are totally made up,” says the disclaimer on Netflix hit Inventing Anna. Exactly which parts are made up will be for a Delaware federal court to decide. Rachel Williams has sued the streaming service over her portrayal in the series, which fictionalizes the escapades of Anna Sorokin — more infamously known as Anna Delvey — as she lies and scams her way through New York’s high society. Williams argues she was intentionally misrepresented as a “greedy, snobbish, disloyal, dishonest, cowardly, manipulative and opportunistic person” in order to tell a more compelling story. | | The Climb | An Oregon Octogenarian Is on a Mission to Rename Mount Swastika When she heard the name of the mountain in Umpqua National Forest, Joyce McClain couldn’t believe it was real. The 81-year-old has now made it her mission to have it changed. “People need to come forward and take action when they see something that isn't right or needs to be changed,” she explained. The mountain’s name predates the rise of Adolf Hitler by around 30 years and came from a nearby ranch. The Oregon Historical Society, which proposed the name Mount Halo in honor of Chief Halito of the Yoncalla Kalapuya tribe, will vote in December on the new moniker. (Source: NPR) |

| | She’s Back | Williams Bounces Back at US Open: Is It a Curtain Call? It was vintage Serena Williams hitting the green-and-blue of Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York for round one of her U.S. Open play Monday night. She delighted fans with a straight-set win over Montenegro's Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3, a sharp improvement on the Wimbledon loss that left Williams scrambling to leave the stadium. Going out on top would be fitting for the 23-time Grand Slam champion, and fans think this could be her final hurrah after announcing her intentions to retire and focus on her family. “I feel so comfortable on this court,” Williams said. “I was really calm.” (Sources: Tennis, Sporting News) |

| Michael DeVore: A Cut Above the Rest | | It was a cutting-edge idea that transformed Michael DeVore from a college innovator to a full-fledged entrepreneur. In 2015, DeVore won an OZY Genius Award for Live Chair, a scheduling and booking mobile app that pairs barbers with low-income students for discounted services. Since then, the app has pivoted into the healthcare industry, making the most of the barbershop space by connecting minority clients to healthcare providers. “For many men, barbers are more than just the professional who cuts their hair,” explained DeVore. “Barbers are therapists, mentors, confidants, coaches, role models, fathers, brothers.” The app — now known as Live Chair Health — raised a further $3.5 million in June this year. And while that’s an impressive amount of funding, the entrepreneur doesn’t plan on stopping there. “I am hoping we can raise larger rounds in the future to continue expanding and helping more people across the United States,” said DeVore. The entrepreneur says, in addition to securing financial investments, he’s also building the right network around himself. “I realized that I needed a team with different skill sets to help take Live Chair to the next level,” he said. Help came in the shape of Andrew Suggs, Live Chair Health co-founder and CEO. As well as being the company’s first investor after OZY, “over time, he has become a big brother to me,” said DeVore. DeVore is also inspired by the people closest to him, including his “amazing wife,” whom the entrepreneur married last year. “My family is now my top motivation and the fuel that keeps me chasing my entrepreneurial endeavors,” he said. Success can be a bumpy ride, but that hasn’t held DeVore back. “I have learned that startups are an emotional rollercoaster,” he said. “There are so many failures and wins throughout the journey. It is important not to dwell too much on these moments, as things change fast.” Watch DeVore’s Video Here. |
