Why is climate change important? |
We know climate change is happening, and we know that it is caused by people’s lifestyles. As a result, the Earth's atmosphere is warming. And, in some cases, weather patterns, climates and natural environments are changing quicker than wildlife or people can adapt. So many of the world's biggest challenges, from poverty to wildlife extinction, are made more difficult by climate change. And things will get worse if we do nothing. . |

What progress is being made? |
COP23 takes place two years after the landmark Paris Agreement in 2015 delivered a global deal on tackling climate change. Unfortunately, the 2015 agreement is already under pressure, with the Trump Administration in the US threatening the hard-won international consensus. But, positively, the Paris Agreement doesn't just rely on government to make things happen. Business, civil society and sub-national government all have a role to play. And three years ago we established the Lima-Paris Action Agenda, a way for these groups to act together. The Action Agenda is already proving its worth with the ‘We Are Still In’ coalition in the US. Mayors, governors, tribal leaders, CEOs and university presidents have all come together to defy Trump’s climate-unfriendly approach. |

What needs to happen at COP23? |
The Paris Agreement was a major step forward. But the government pledges made there to cut emissions do not add up to preventing harmful climate change. More action is required – and COP23 is an opportunity for states to commit to doing more. |
