U.S. students still trail behind their peers in a number of Asian countries when it comes to math and science performance, according to results released last week from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Eighth-grade students in the United States showed some improvement in math and science over the past four years, but science scores for U.S. fourth graders were flat.

NSTA Executive Director David Evans told The Washington Post that he is now hopeful that new science standards that have been adopted by a growing number of states -- and that push students to solve problems and learn about science by doing science -- will make a difference, prompting bigger gains in the coming years.

Get an overview of the NGSS and K–12 lessons modeling their practices and core ideas at this Sonoma County, California, Office of Education website. NASA's SciJinks website on weather, satellite meteorology, and Earth science helps middle level and high school teachers find lessons that match the NGSS elements: disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. And download KnowAtom's e-book on the differences between the NGSS and NGSS-aligned K–12 curriculum (free registration required). For more free resources on the NGSS, visit NSTA's Freebies for Science Teachers website.
