We’ve interviewed countless growers with various professional backgrounds working now in the cannabis industry. Each person brings a unique skill set and aspirational goals to the job, and we like learning more about that more personal side of the business. A few years back, we launched the Cannabis Workspace interview series. It’s a stock set of questions meant to draw out a deeper understanding of the day-to-day habits of growers from around the world. The patchwork of conversations represents a terrific illustration of what it’s like to work in cannabis—including both the fun stuff and the backbreaking grind. "In the world of growing, experience is everything," says Jorel Decker, owner of Ramshead Cannabis, in our latest interview. "You can read 1,000 textbooks and watch 1,000 YouTube videos, but when a pump breaks and your plants have to be fed ASAP, you better know how to open that pump up and fix it." Indeed, these interviews are often about far more than just growing cannabis. The job itself demands much from the grower, like good old fashioned mechanical know-how and perhaps a penchant for plumbing. “Being a cultivator isn’t always glamourous; there is a lot of other work that is involved, especially in the medicinal cannabis industry, like cleaning, record keeping and repetitive tasks,” says Zoe Reece, founder and CEO of Ora Pharm in New Zealand. “Attitude and passion are very important too.” No doubt about that. Famed self-improvement teacher Dale Carnegie knew that better than anyone, and his lessons are pertinent for those toiling in the cannabis space today. “It isn't work that makes you tired, it's your mental attitude,” he once said. To that end, we always ask interview subjects what keeps them awake at night and what helps them sleep. After a long day of work—good mental attitude or no—one hopes that sleep comes easily. Thankfully, this industry keys us into a major nighttime aid. Decker had a simple answer to that question about sleep: “Weed, duh!” Want to be interviewed in an upcoming Cannabis Workspace?
