A bill signed by Gov. Mike DeWine allows gas companies to charge Ohio’s 3.7 million gas customers up to $1.50 per month for as long as five years to extend gas lines to sites that could potentially be used for megaprojects, even if no buyer has been lined up yet. Gas costs: Natural gas companies could soon charge Ohio customers tens of millions of dollars more per year to build pipelines to potential megaproject sites under legislation signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine on Thursday. Jeremy Pelzer and Jake Zuckerman report DeWine’s signature on House Bill 201 marks an about-face from earlier this year, when he used his line-item veto authority to strip out a similar proposal from the state’s massive two-year budget plan. Minimum wage: An estimated 487,000 Ohioans will see their wages rise slightly in 2024, thanks to an automatic increase in the state’s minimum wage to $10.45 per hour for most non-tipped workers and $5.25 hourly for tipped workers. The increases, which take effect Jan. 1, are up from the state’s current minimum wage of $10.10 per hour for non-tipped workers and $5.05 per hour for tipped employees, Jeremy Pelzer reports. |

People's budget: Gov. Mike DeWine has signed a bipartisan bill that would block many Ohio cities, if not all of them, from passing participatory budgeting measures, like the “People’s Budget” city charter amendment that Cleveland voters narrowly rejected last month, Andrew Tobias reports. Elliot Forhan: Embattled Cleveland-area state Rep. Elliot Forhan has accused Attorney General Dave Yost of “political favoritism” for covering the legal bills of a fellow lawmaker who has sought a protective order against Forhan, but not doing the same for him, Jeremy Pelzer reports. |

Longfellow School: The century-old Longfellow Elementary School in Cleveland’s Collinwood neighborhood has been repurposed as affordable housing for seniors, Steven Litt reports. The renovated and expanded school, where a ribbon-cutting was held in October, was 100% leased as of Dec. 21. Memorial service: The family of Cassandra Fear will host a celebration of life event at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Lakewood Congregational Church, 1375 W. Clifton Blvd., Lakewood. Fear, a beloved Cleveland chocolatier, was struck and killed by a vehicle after being involved in a crash with a parked car on the 3700 block of West 130th Street on Dec. 16, Peter Chakerian reports. |

COVID update: After 10 weeks of steady gains, the number of new COVID-19 cases in Ohio finally dropped this week, from 15,152 last week to 14,814 this week, Julie Washington reports. Weekly case numbers had been rising since mid-October, and remain well over the 10,000-case benchmark. Great Lakes Brewing: Great Lakes Brewing Co. (GLBC) announced early Thursday that it plans to carry on operations at their historic Ohio City brewpub and gift shop at 2516 Market Ave. “indefinitely” while evaluating potential locations for a new combined production facility in Greater Cleveland, Peter Chakerian reports. |

Appeal: Cuyahoga County prosecutors are asking the Ohio Supreme Court to overturn an appeals court’s ruling that they say could hinder their ability to bring abusers to justice, Cory Shaffer reports. Suspect surrenders: A man wanted by the Bedford Heights Police Department in connection with the shooting death of a Bedford woman surrendered to authorities on Thursday. Joseph Bowman, 36, of Cleveland is accused of fatally shooting Seritha Ballantyne, 45, of Bedford, on Saturday, Olivia Mitchell reports. |

Eats and Drinks: Scientists insist time machines don’t yet exist. Peter Chakerian respectfully disagrees. Archie Garner Sr., Hough Bakeries’ longtime head pastry chef and the owner of Archie’s Hough Bakeries in Beachwood, has a kitchen full of them. They look like ovens, mixers, baking utensils. Pickle drinks: Pickles have always been a beloved food, delicious to eat on top of a sandwich or even straight out of the jar while standing in the fridge door. These days, it’s not uncommon to see pickles make their way to cocktail menus and beyond for folks who can’t get enough of the flavor profile, Alex Darus reports. |
