Island residents and Old Town grapple over rights to land

  • When the last known owner of a plot of land on Treat and Webster Island apparently abandoned the property in the 1930s, some nearby residents claimed parts of it as their own. Now, they find themselves embroiled in a land dispute with the city over who really has rights to it. The land in question -- known as lot 189 -- sits along the southwestern end of the island, surrounded by the Penobscot River.

  • The controversial hydropower corridor proposal has been a rare point of agreement between the former Republican governor and Janet Mills, his Democratic successor, but his paid work for a lobbying firm on the issue could take on added political importance as he considers a 2022 run to oust Mills.
Maine’s newest ferry, the Richard G. Spear, will soon be bound for Vinalhaven  
  • It’s been under construction for two years in East Boothbay and is expected to be completed in mid-April. The $9 million ferry will join the E. Frank Thompson, which also provides year round service to Vinalhaven, the largest of the six island communities served by Maine State Ferry Service.
