One year ago today, Russian troops invaded Ukraine, an act of war that shocked the world. For American Jews, the echoes of history were palpable, and only intensified as we watched the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.

No one was expecting a Russian invasion of Ukraine, but our journalists were ready. We immediately provided a panoply of stories looking at the war through a Jewish lens, and in the early weeks of the war, both Larry Cohler-Esses and I traveled to the region to witness the refugee crisis firsthand. When a Russian missile struck near the complex of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the world’s Jews to speak out against Russia’s invasion. “Nazism is born in silence,” he said. “So shout.”
