From the Scottish Highlands to the Outer Hebrides
There's plenty of unforgettable scenic journeys to undertake, right on our doorstep. Here's three of our favourite...
Scottish Highlands
There’re few areas with more wondrous scenery than the Scottish Highlands - riding on Scotland’s most celebrated railways is the perfect way to enjoy it. Travel between Inverness and Kyle for spectacular views of the Black Isle and Northern Highlands, admire miles of unspoilt scenery on the Strathspey Steam Railway and take the West Highland Line to the fishing village of Mallaig, for a breathtaking sight of Ben Nevis.
Historic Railways of the Isle of Man
Savour the slower pace of life on the Jewel of the Irish Sea, with a tranquil train journey against a backdrop of rolling hills, wonderful beaches and clear skies. Take the famous Steam Railway to explore Castle Rushen and Port Erin, and the Manx Electric Railway to see the historic coast. After admiring the world’s largest working waterwheel – Lady Isabella – go in search of views across Britain on the Snaefell Mountain Railway.
Outer Hebrides
Scotland’s Western Isles are magical. Marvel at stunning mountains, moorlands and ocean-washed sands, and learn about the distinctive culture and ancient history. Combine a trip to colourful Portree and Dunvegan Castle – said to be Scotland’s oldest continuously occupied ‘family home’. Don’t miss visits to South Uist, the Isle of Harris and the Standing Stones of Callanish - a dramatic collection of almost 50 ancient stones.
