OpenAI’s Nonprofit to Retain Control of Company |
The OpenAI Board has officially announced that the company’s nonprofit will remain in control. This comes after months of criticism and legal battles over OpenAI’s previous plan to pivot into a for-profit company. |

“We made the decision for the nonprofit to retain control of OpenAI after hearing from civic leaders and engaging in constructive dialogue with the offices of the Attorney General of Delaware and the Attorney General of California,” Bret Taylor, OpenAI's board chairman, said in a blog post. In the blog, OpenAI also stated that its for-profit LLC, which has been under the nonprofit since 2019, will transition into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC).According to the company, the nonprofit will maintain control and serve as a “big shareholder" in the new PBC. Why It Matters: The move,at least for the moment, reinforces OpenAI’s commitment to developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) that benefits all of humanity while preserving its ability to raise capital from investors through the PBC. This is a crucial conclusion, especially given that AI experts previously warned that a for-profit OpenAI model could lead to “dangerous AI” and the company possibly abandoning AI development geared toward the public good. Phew….Hooray for humanity! |

New Study: AI Boom Yet to Deliver Gains in Productivity, Earnings |
According to a recent study, adopting AI in the workplace has not yet yielded significant gains in worker productivity, work hours, and wages. This starkly contrasts with AI’s perceived benefit of boosting productivity and increasing overall efficiency. Specifically, it found that AI only saved an average of 2.8% of work time. This roughly translates to one hour saved for every 40-hour work week. It was also observed that many employees actually used the saved time to manage new AI-related responsibilities or review AI outputs. |
This comes from a study conducted by Denmark-based researchers Anders Humlum and Emilie Vestergaard. The report analyzed the labor market effects of AI chatbots and AI tools, like ChatGPT, among 25,000 workers in 7,000 workplaces in Denmark. With AI’s widespread adoption in various industries, it’s interesting to see whether it can truly generate real-world gains for businesses and enterprises. While there’s still plenty to watch with AI in the workplace, early findings suggest we may need to dial back our expectations—for now. The rise of AI had us dreaming of 10x productivity and, well, more doomscroll time. |

Microsoft: Goodbye Passwords, Hello Passkeys |
Microsoft began replacing password logins with passkeys as the default sign-in method for new accounts on May 1. This will come in the form of facial recognition tools, fingerprint authentication, and PINs. According to Microsoft, the transition shows their part in joining the Passkey Pledge—a voluntary pledge by the FIDO Alliance to implement and adopt passkey sign-ins within a company’s services. |
Microsoft isn’t the only company joining the passkey party. Apple and Google have also re-committed to the same FIDO Passkey standards. This might very well be the beginning of the end for the humble password, particularly as passkeys have been found to provide faster logins and better security. |
‘Golden Chickens’ Spotted with Two New Malware Tools Designed to Steal Credentials |
The notorious hacker group Golden Chickens has been linked to two new malware strains—TerraStealerV2 and TerraLogger—designed to steal credentials, log keystrokes, and compromise cryptocurrency wallets. According to cybersecurity analysts at Recorded Future’s Insikt Group, the malware strains were seen in the wild between January and April 2025, specifically targeting data stored in Chrome browsers. Fortunately, the tools can’t crack Chrome’s new security safeguards after July 2024. Moral of the story? Keep your Chrome browser updated and ready. |
Duolingo Plans to Swap Contractors with AI |
How do you say, “Will AI take my job?” in Spanish? Duolingo has announced that it will become an AI-first company and “gradually stop using contractors to do work that AI can handle.” The announcement came from a note written by Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn, who added that hiring within the company would only be done if a “team cannot automate more of their work.” |

In recent months, Duolingo has ramped up its use of AI, particularly in terms of content creation and the production of learning materials. While von Ahn emphasized that the changes are not “about replacing Duos with AI,” it’s clear that the company is undergoing a massive shift, as evidenced by its AI-related layoffs just last year. Looks like even Duolingo’s famous owl is brushing up on Python. If you hear “¡Adiós, humanos!” during your next Spanish lesson…run. |
