 | | Some little-known effects of global warming | | 18/03/2024 The effects of climate change are more diverse than they appear, according to Louis Caudron. In some parts of the world, rainfall will increase, while in others, droughts will raise the problem of access to water and how to store it. Major shipping routes will evolve, such as the Northern Sea Route, which could be ice-free all year round from 2035.  | | Agriculture, the adjustment variable in trade agreements? | | 18/03/2024 In a context of liberalised trade, agriculture has a special place in the agreements negotiated by the European Union. Often the source of disputes, it must be analysed on a sector-by-sector basis to assess the impact of these agreements on European producers. The beef sector appears to be the weak link in the trade negotiations. Even if no trade agreement radically changes a market, certain lessons can be learned: negotiations remain too opaque, the environmental impact is not taken into account, controls are difficult and safeguard clauses are ineffective.  | | 2024, a European political year - as seen by women | | 04/03/2024 Although women have fought hard for the right to vote, they still face many obstacles to taking part in political life. Yet their mobilisation can make a difference at the polls, with fewer women than men voting for the far right. On the political scene, however, they suffer from a lack of representation, and when they do enter government, it is often for ministries of lesser importance. To achieve equality, women have to be prepared to take risks and overcome the mistrust they suffer.  | | Ivan Korcok and Peter Pellegrini will face each other in the second round of the Slovak presidential election on 6 April | | 23/03/2024 To everyone's surprise, Ivan Korcok, former Minister of Foreign Affairs (2020-2022), came out ahead in the 1st round of the presidential election. Supported by Progressive Slovakia (PS), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Democrats (D) of, European Blue Slovakia (M) of former Prime Minister (1998-2006) Mikulas Dzurinda and the Civic Conservative Party (OKS), He won 42.51% of the vote, ahead of Peter Pellegrini (Hlas), current President of the National Council of the Republic (Narodna rada Slovenskej republiky), the single chamber of parliament and former Prime Minister (2018-2020), who won 37.02% of the vote. The candidate was supported by Prime Minister Robert Fico's party, Direction-Social Democracy (SMER-SD). The two men will meet again in the 2nd round on 6 April. | | Read the study |

 | | The Right is set to form the next government in Portugal | | 11/03/2024 The Democratic Alliance, which comprises the Social Democratic Party (PSD) led by Luis Montenegro, the Social Democratic Centre/People's Party (CDS/PP), a Christian Democrat led by Nuno Melo, and the Monarchist People's Party (PPM), came out ahead in the 10 March general election in Portugal with 29.52% of the vote, representing 80 of the 230 seats in the Assembly of the Republic, the single chamber of parliament (+8 compared to the previous general election on 30 January 2022). The alliance beat the Socialist Party (PS), led by Pedro Nuno Santos, which won 28.63% of the vote and 76 seats (down 44). Chega (Enough) (CH), André Ventura's radical right-wing party, came third with 18.06% of the vote (48 deputies, +36). | | Read the study |
