Towards a “painless, frictionless” Brexit Published on 15/10/2018 Without an agreement (which would enable an orderly Brexit) regarding the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, there will be serious problems for those involved in the transport industry. Whilst the negotiations between the Union and the UK are now entering their final phase, this issue is stressed by Jacques Gounon, the CEO of Getlink, the company that operates the Channel Tunnel. More than 1.6 million lorries transit yearly via the tunnel. The end of the simplified customs procedure would affect this logistic flow, thereby affecting all of the Member States and the smooth functioning of the Single Mar ket. He hopes for a “frictionless” relationship, the mildest form of which will penalise quite severely the continent’s economic environment. |

The Sword and the Market – a Defence Union would strengthen European economic integration Published on 01/10/2018 The European integration and economic policy can only move forward on the base of a shared diagnosis of the missing elements, and of common ground regarding mutual advantages. By obliging the Member States to pool resources towards commonly defined goals, new initiatives in the defence industry would help speed up the convergence of their economies. |
