COOK THIS NOW

Sourdough Rye Brownies

An overhead look at fudgy sourdough brownies, cut into 16 squares, with crackling tops and flaky salt sprinkled all over the top.

I love a holiday cooking project. And that’s what these brownies are; so in case you haven’t gotten enough sweets yet, consider making this your next bake. They aren’t difficult to make, but they do take some hands-off fermentation time. The result is the fudgiest brownie with the crackliest top I’ve ever eaten, and just a whisper of sour flavor.

It’s just one of our 2019 all-star recipes from the cookbooks we couldn’t put down this year. Others include a Filipino shrimp gravy, a perfect okonomiyaki, a saag paneer riff from Priya Krishna’s Indian(ish), and an easy rice porridge that’ll get a lot of play from me when COOK90 rolls around in January. Check them all out here—maybe while waiting on that brownie starter to activate.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow,
