Safety and quality in healthcare do not simply happen. Nurse leaders work closely with other nurses and staff to actively create and build a culture of safety across the organization. National Nurses Week happens every May, not just to recognize Florence Nightingale’s groundbreaking leadership but to celebrate important changes she brought to patient care and the profession of nursing. In this presentation, we are going to consider a few of her activities and how nurse leaders have advanced some of those ideas to create a definitive culture of safety and quality in all practice settings. We will look at some opportunities in which leaders and frontline staff can contribute to building a stronger and safer environment of care as we celebrate National Nurses Week—and now, Nurses’ Month—together.
