The more I dug into this story, the clearer it became that the system designed to support people with disabilities is fundamentally broken. There are so many points where intentions and outcomes don't align — and this safety net fails. Early in my reporting, a source expressed to me that people with disabilities rarely get the chance to speak for themselves in the media. So this story would not have been possible without the many brave people who invited me into their lives and told me their stories. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a listener, and I recognize the responsibility that comes with it. One year ago, I graduated from college and began my internship with OZY. I was hungry. My dream of being a journalist has always been driven by the desire to use my platform to amplify perspectives that too often go unheard. This story is not about my voice — it’s about the voices of those who live this reality. It’s also about the understanding that no two narratives, or experiences with disability, are the same. This investigation is only the beginning. Please write to me: Tell me your stories, tell me other issues I should look into, and tell me which perspectives aren’t being considered in these conversations. You can reach me at carly.stern@ozy.com. I’m still hungry. And I’ll keep at it. Yours, |
