Picasso‘s ceramics, especially those in the crossover of fine and applied art, show once again in which unique way this multi-faceted artist has given the ceramic material shapes of high sculptural and also painterly qualities: Picasso painted unkilned plates and hollow ware and created impressive images. He turned cans and vases into sculptural compositions.

Was it coincidence, was it destiny? In 1946 Picasso visited the annual ceramics exhibition of Vallauris in southern France where he met Suzanne and Georges Ramié, owners of the ceramic workshop Madoura. Even while Picasso visited the workshop, he modeled the head of a faun and two small bulls. Two years later he settled in Vallauris where he created numerous visionary ceramics, all of which were kilned at Madoura.

War es Zufall, war es Schicksal? 1946 besuchte Picasso die jährliche Keramikausstellung von Vallauris in Südfrankreich. Er lernte Suzanne und Georges Ramié kennen, die Inhaber der keramischen Werkstatt Madoura. Schon während Picasso die Werkstatt besichtigte, modellierte er einen Faunkopf und zwei kleine Stiere. Zwei Jahre später ließ er sich in Vallauris nieder, wo bis 1955 zahlreichen Keramiken entstanden, die alle bei Madoura gebrannt wurden. Die Themen und Motive aus seinem malerischen Œuvre nahm Picasso in seiner Keramik wieder auf: Frauen und Faune, Tauben, Eulen, Fische und Stierkampfszenen schmücken seine Vasen, Platten, Schalen und Krüge.
