Oregon wildfire ruling against PacifiCorp spotlights one major challenge facing utilities today

A hotter, drier climate increases the risk of utility equipment igniting wildfires. But with customer rates already at all-time highs, utilities are loath to increase them. A verdict last week against PacifiCorp highlights the issue at hand. Grid hardening through undergrounding or additional vegetation management is expensive and raises rates for customers. Inaction, however, could have deadly consequences.
