Conservative Pandemic Recovery Efforts This Saturday, Democrats pushed through their partisan “COVID relief” bill, less than 10 percent of which actually provides COVID health care relief. In a series of votes that lasted more than 24 hours, I introduced and voted for amendments that would have helped reopen schools, protect our economy, and limit liberal, big government overreach. Once again, my colleagues on the Left were not interested in these conversations to create legislation targeted to help those impacted by the pandemic. Instead, they unanimously voted against several commonsense proposals, including my amendment that would have held states accountable for underreporting COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes. It’s disappointing that Democrats supported this deeply partisan bill, which puts liberal special interests and labor bosses ahead of the American people. But you can rest assured that—no matter what—I will continue to fight for a conservative and constructive approach to our pandemic recovery. You can view my full statement on the bill here. Empowering our Workforce Now, more than ever, our nation’s workforce needs support and stability. That is why Senator Blackburn and I introduced the Modern Worker Empowerment Act, along with Representatives Elise Stefanik and Michelle Steel who are leading the bill in the House, to standardize federal laws regarding employees and independent contractors. Our nation’s workers and entrepreneurs are leading the charge in our economic recovery, and this bill will ensure they have the flexibility and independence they need to follow their dreams. Remembering Freedom Champions like John Lewis Yesterday marked 56 years since Alabama state troopers brutally attacked Congressman John Lewis and hundreds of peaceful protestors on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. This was the first anniversary of Bloody Sunday without my friend John, and while we miss his voice, his legacy lives on. It’s my prayer that we will imitate his bravery and respect for all people as we face the challenges of today. Sincerely, |
