Parks and Planning Departments Showcase Accomplishments from Past Six Months with Spring 2018 Semiannual Report
The Montgomery Parks and Montgomery Planning Departments presented their Spring 2018 Semiannual Report to the Montgomery County Council on Tuesday, March 20, 2018. The report, available online, showcases key projects, activities and plans for each department from the past six months and work that will be completed over the next six months and beyond.

2018 Montgomery Parks Arbor Day Video Contest
Montgomery Parks is pleased to invite 3rd-5th grade students to participate in a video contest for a chance to host an Arbor Day Celebration at their school this April! In a short video, tell us how "Trees are Superheroes." Trees provide oxygen, wood and food. They filter pollutants from the air, provide shade and provide shelter to a variety of critters. That's why trees are super! Submissions are due March 29 and will be posted to the Montgomery Parks' YouTube Channel. The winning video will be displayed on Montgomery Parks' social media channels and website.

Kites Over Clarksburg
Join Montgomery Parks and the Clarksburg Foundation, Saturday, March 31, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., for the 10th Annual Kites Over Clarksburg at the Ovid Hazen Wells Recreation Park. The event is free and open to the public.
Bring a canned food item, used eyeglasses, or hearing aid to donate to local charities and receive a raffle ticket for prizes from local sponsors. |

Montgomery Planning Reschedules Evening Community Listening Session About a New State Development Plan from March 12 to April 16
The Montgomery County Planning Department has rescheduled the public event, A Better Maryland: Community Listening Session Agenda, from Monday, March 12, 2018 to Monday, April 16, 2018. The session will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Department's headquarters (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD).
The purpose of the session is for state officials to hear from county residents about how best to update Maryland's overall development plan, called A Better Maryland, that is being created by the Maryland Department of Planning. This plan will establish update Maryland's goals and objectives for growing responsibly, protecting our resources, supporting existing communities and creating quality places.

Planning Board Will Hold Public Hearing for the Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan on April 26
The Montgomery County Planning Board will hold a public hearing for the Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the Planning Department headquarters (8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD). The planning recommendations address land use and zoning; urban design; transportation; parks, trails and open spaces; sustainability and community facilities.
One of the chief goals of the plan is to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and public transit users within the Veirs Mill corridor, in accordance with Montgomery County's Vision Zero policy, which has a goal to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries by 2030.

A digital GIS-based feedback map for the plan allows residents to provide comments online based on the three categories of recommendations: safety, connectivity and community enhancement. Staff has considered this feedback in preparing the Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan Public Hearing Draft and the public can still add comments to the Veirs Mill Preliminary Recommendations Feedback Map through early May 2018.

Bike Share in Montgomery Parks
It's as easy as ever to grab a bike and go! Bike rental kiosks are located at Black Hill Regional Park and Wheaton Regional Park. To participate in the Montgomery Parks bike share program, each rider must download the Zagster app and enroll for free. Riders without a smart phone can text SMS to (202) 999-3924 to learn how to ride by text message. In Montgomery Parks, Zagster bike share rides under two hours are free. After two hours, riders will pay $3 per hour to continue using the bikes. More information |

Montgomery Parks Issued a Request For Proposal (RFP) For Adaptive Use and Tenancy for Nolte Local Park and Colesville Local Park Activity Buildings on March 15, 2018. The buildings will be available for five-year leases to interested groups. Additional information on the RFP's is available for review at the M-NPCC website and on the e-Maryland Marketplace. Interested bidders should monitor the e-Maryland marketplace website for the issuance of this RFP. Montgomery Parks is holding a community meeting Wednesday April 18, 2018 at 7 p.m. to present plans to improve Silver Spring Intermediate Neighborhood Park. The meeting will take place at the Montgomery Regional Office (MRO) Auditorium, located at 8787 Georgia Avenue and attendees will have a chance to provide input on park issues and comment on proposed improvements. | Accessibility Improvements Continue Work is underway at the Black Hill Regional Park Boat House to improve accessibility. Other access improvement projects include Sligo-Dennis Avenue Local Park, the Archery Range at Rock Creek Regional Park and the Archery Range at South Germantown Recreational Park. Playground Updates Playgrounds at South Gunner's Branch Local Park, Dale Drive Neighborhood Park and Hunters Woods Local Park are closed as part of the Playground Renovation Program. Work is scheduled to continue through early Spring 2018.
