Is there a specific way we come up with these names or are they just randomly pulled out of a hat? The answer is more complex, and yet more simple, than you might think. A Christmas tradition: Yet another fruitcake you canât eat Itâs almost a cliché at this point, but a fruitcake for Christmas is a long-lived tradition that some take more seriously than others. But for one family in Michigan, thereâs no need to ever buy or make another one again. The Ruttingers have a fruitcake in their possession thatâs older than every single living member of their family. Originally baked by a great great grandparent who died before it could be enjoyed, the surviving family decided to preserve the fruitcake as an heirloom. Now, 141 years later, the Ruttingers still show off the dish to family, friends and curious onlookers. In fact, the Ruttingerâs cake is one of the oldest in the world, but itâs got nothing on the record holder: a cake from Ancient Egypt baked 4,176 years ago. Itâs got a ways to go, but letâs hope the Ruttinger cake has a chance to bring the family joy for another 4,035 Christmases. Cakes have changed quite a bit over the years.
