But for one family in Michigan, there’s no need to ever buy or make another one again. The Ruttingers have a fruitcake in their possession that’s older than every single living member of their family. Originally baked by a great great grandparent who died before it could be enjoyed, the surviving family decided to preserve the fruitcake as an heirloom. Now, 141 years later, the Ruttingers still show off the dish to family, friends and curious onlookers. In fact, the Ruttinger’s cake is one of the oldest in the world, but it’s got nothing on the record holder: a cake from Ancient Egypt baked 4,176 years ago. It’s got a ways to go, but let’s hope the Ruttinger cake has a chance to bring the family joy for another 4,035 Christmases.
