Deputy National Rural Health Commissioner, and Australia’s first registered Aboriginal pharmacist, Associate Professor Faye McMillian, has been named the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s (PSA’s) Pharmacist of the Year.
Presenting the award at the PSA’s national conference in Sydney this morning, PSA National President, Dr Fei Sim, lauded McMillan’s “remarkable career as a pharmacist… in particular her work within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities”.
“Faye has had a great impact on the health of Indigenous Australians, as well as the pharmacy profession more broadly,” Sim said.
“I cannot think of a pharmacist more deserving of this award.”
Wangaratta-based GP pharmacist, Deborah Hawthorne, was presented with the PSA’s Early Career Pharmacists of the Year title this morning, with Sim noting her efforts to lessen the healthcare gap felt by rural Australians.
“PSA is proud to congratulate Deborah on her award, and look forward to continuing to support her career as a pharmacist in Victoria,” Sim said.
“In her role as an embedded GP Pharmacist, Deborah has worked collaboratively with her community, championing medicine safety, and ensuring that pharmacist expertise is available wherever medicines are.”
