Rotary Peace Fellows win resources to hold 10 peacebuilding events

Twelve Rotary Peace Fellows are about to get even more guidance in their area of focus. They are not just peace fellows, but also a select group of Global Peace Index Ambassadors recognized for their innovative ideas on working with Rotary clubs to spread messages of peace.
Through the ambassador program, a collaboration between Rotary and the Institute for Economics and Peace, over 100 former and current peace fellows spent two months receiving training on the methodology that the institute uses to create the Global Peace Index, a key tool for quantifying peace. Ambassadors learned about the research behind the institute’s research into Positive Peace and Rotary’s increasing involvement in promoting peace.
During the “10 for the 10th” competition, which celebrated the 10th annual release of the index, ambassadors submitted creative ideas for communicating the findings of the report and working with clubs. The winners will get training to give Global Peace Index presentations in 10 cities around the world and will receive up to $1,000 to conduct the events.
The institute announced the winners at the Future of Peace Summit on 15 June in Washington, D.C. The 10 winning proposals were submitted by 12 current and former peace fellows. Read more.
Reminder: For 2017-18 Rotary Peace Fellowships, districts must submit endorsed applications to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July.

	How can technology improve living conditions for refugees?

	Anne Riechert (ICU, 2010-12) organized Spacehack: The Refugee Journey, a hackathon that took place 4-5 June in Berlin. It challenged 250 refugees, developers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and change makers to build solutions to problems facing refugees. Rebeccah Bartlett (Duke-UNC, 2014-16), who is researching the use of digital technology to increase refugee mothers’ and children’s access to health care and health information, met with Riechert and volunteered with Spacehack. 	Uppsala equips nine to pursue peace

	Congratulations to the nine Rotary Peace Fellows who graduated this month from the Rotary Peace Center at Uppsala University in Sweden. The 2016 class, along with local Rotarians and friends, gathered to celebrate this milestone ending two years of training, study, and practice. “I was honored earlier this month to witness the beginning of nine careers in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, as the most recent class at the Rotary Peace Center at Uppsala University received their master’s degrees,” says Magnus Elfwendahl, the center’s host area coordinator and a member of the Rotary Club of Uppsala-Carolina, Sweden. Rotary Peace Centers event at the Pro Football Hall of Fame

On 14 May, Rotarians from Zone 29, mostly covering the U.S., gathered at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, for a Rotary Peace Center event.
D.F. Pace, a June 2011 graduate of the peace center at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, described how his experience shaped his career as a lieutenant in the Philadelphia Police Department. The evening also featured a live auction of a football signed by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
After the program, the 40 Rotarians and guests were welcome to tour the Hall of Fame.
