Peak of Flight Newsletter #506:

Building Custom Tubes for Scale Models

Peak-of-Flight Newsletter

Building a scale model from scratch is a fun and challenging activity.  However, there are occasions when non-standard tube sizes are required.

In this article by author Chris Flanigan, he describes the technique for making body tubes to satisfy specific dimensions from very thin flat sheets of fiberglass.  The material is dimensionally accurate, lightweight, and easily painted.  It’s a great method to add to your scale modeling toolbox.

LOC Terrier-Sandhawk

Terrier Sandhawk

The Terrier-Sandhawk is a high power two-stage rocket designed for high-altitude flights. This is a complex rocket, and is recommended only for the person that is looking for their next challenge after completing their Level 1 or Level 2 certification. What makes it complex is that you'll have to build in a side-mounted ebay sled (included from Apogee Components only) into the model in order to house the electronics that are needed to ignite the upper stage motor. It is a crowd-pleaser for sure. And you'll have earned the applause after the effort you put into building this rocket.

Chute Release Protection Blankets

Parachute Protection Blanket with Chute Release PocketDo you have problems with your parachute slipping out of the rubber band of the Jolly Logic Chute Release?

The Chute Release Protection Blanket solves this problem and does even more:

  1. It is a Nomex/Kevlar® blanket that protects the parachute from the heat of the ejection charge.
  2. It also keeps the parachute from slipping out of the rubber band because of the way you fold it up.
  3. And it protects the Jolly Logic Chute Release from heat damage by encasing it in its own pouch.
  4. Finally, the pouch is sewn into the blanket, so if the parts of the rocket come down separately, the chute release is much easier to find.

Available in three sizes 9-3/4", 12" and 14" blankets. MORE ON ORDER!!

2-Engine Motor Mount Kits

Twin Engine Motor Mount Kits

Looking to experiment with twin-engine rockets? By using two motors, your rocket takes off twice as fast, or you can loft a heavier rocket. Apogee Components has three new motor mount kits that allow you to convert many common rocket kits to use two motors. We have kits for 24mm motors into either BT-70 or BT-80 size tubes, and a twin 29mm motor mount into a BT-80 (2.6-inch diameter) tube. All three motor mounts contain motor retention, so you don't need to buy any other retention device.

Estes Double Ringer

Double Ringer Rocket Kit

The new Double Ringer is a unique rocket in that it uses two special gliders called "annular wings" attached to the side that provide stability for the rocket as it ascends into the air. When the rocket reaches apogee and the parachute is ejected, the two gliders detach from the tube and fly gently to the the ground. This is a great kit for younger rocketeers, as it is designed to be simple to build.

Customer Comments

“Since my discovery of Apogee Rockets, Tim and his crew have been my “Go-To” for kits, motors and information. His staff is not only courteous but knowledgeable of the products they sell AND well informed on rocketry in general. There are a number of rocketry stores in the “Web World” but I always go to Apogee first.

I need help with generating the bi-weekly newsletter articles since it takes a lot of effort to put them together. And I'm willing to pay big bucks for your help.

So ask yourself, are you looking to earn some extra money?

I'm now actively seeking writers for articles to appear in this newsletter. And I want unique and cutting-edge articles because that is what you want to read, right? I realize this, so to get articles from outside writers that have the same level of quality, I'm going to have to pay a lot of cash to make it worth it for them. So I've come up with a compensation package where I'll pay up to $350 for good how-to articles.

Are you a writer, and does that interest you? That is a lot of cash! Far more than you'll get by writing for other magazines. And with over 23,000 worldwide subscribers, if you write for the Peak-of-Flight Newsletter, you'll gain a lot of notoriety. Writing for the Peak-of-Flight Newsletter is a great way to show off your rocketry projects and your technical expertise, at the same time as helping out other rocketeers. Imagine how great you'll feel knowing that you made a difference to the hobby.

If you're interested in writing, see the guidelines on our site.
