Peak-of-Flight Newsletter #621:

Making and Using Conical Parachutes

Peak-of-Flight Newsletter

The parachutes supplied with most low power rockets belong to a class of parachutes called “flat circulars.” This is the simplest type of parachute. In the full scale parachute world, many parachutes are now based on a cone shaped canopy rather than a flat canopy.  Conical parachutes have a higher drag coefficient, oscillate less during descent, weigh less, require less material to manufacture, and pack up smaller than their flat counterparts. Even the Shuttle Solid Rocket Boosters were all recovered using conical parachutes. If you'd like to learn more about this type of chute and how to make them, be sure to read the full article.

Estes Great Goblin rocket kitIn 1972, Estes released the "Astron Goblin", a cartoonish looking rocket described as a "spooky kit that gets up and moves." The Great Goblin is an upscale version that is a mid-power monster. This new kit is based around a 3-inch diameter tube with an overall length of 33.5 inches. Because of its 29mm diameter motor mount, you can fly this gigantic gargoyle on motors ranging from an E to a G-size. Recovery is achieved with a large 24 inch diameter nylon parachute. 3" Nose Cone Ebay Kit

3-inch nose cone bay kitThis new 3" nose cone ebay kit allows you to  mount electronic payloads within nose cones. This is great for allowing GPS trackers, altimeters, and electronic deployment to be added to short rockets or already completed rockets without having to cut the body tube. If your rocket is space limited, you can use the internal volume inside the nose cone for your electronics. Note: This kit is designed to fit nose cones for 3-inch diameter thin-wall tubes. It will not fit in nose cones that are for heavy-wall tubes.

I'm now actively seeking writers for articles to appear in this newsletter. And I want unique and cutting-edge articles because that is what you want to read, right? I realize this, so to get articles from outside writers that have the same level of quality, I'm going to have to pay a lot of cash to make it worth it for them. So I've come up with a compensation package where I'll pay up to $350 for good how-to articles.

Are you a writer, and does that interest you? That is a lot of cash! Far more than you'll get by writing for other magazines. And with over 23,000 worldwide subscribers, if you write for the Peak-of-Flight Newsletter, you'll gain a lot of notoriety. Writing for the Peak-of-Flight Newsletter is a great way to show off your rocketry projects and your technical expertise, at the same time as helping out other rocketeers. Imagine how great you'll feel knowing that you made a difference to the hobby.

If you're interested in writing, see the guidelines on our site.
