Newsletter for January 22, 2025 | Happy freezing Wednesday, Baltimore. I'm looking forward to the balmy 30-degree forecast through the next few days. My gripes about the weather aside, let's get into today's newsletter. After years of anticipation, a shiny new building formally opened in West Baltimore. You can read all about 4MLK, the University of Maryland BioPark’s new innovation hub, below. Plus, reporter-at-large Holly Quinn has details on how Trump’s stances could impact local economies. — Kaela, Technical.ly lead reporter in Baltimore and DC | Image of the Day: Snowy sunset at Johns Hopkins University (Kaela Roeder/Technical.ly) Have a photo or chart we should feature here? The University of Delaware Horn Entrepreneurship’s philanthropic “Ultimate High School Entrepreneurship Challenge” draws thousands of students from all over the world to compete for cash prizes to continue to develop their ideas and/or continue their education. Judging happens virtually, so all are welcome to apply. | Baltimore's new home for life sciences | The latest addition to the University of Maryland BioPark, 4MLK features eight floors and 250,000 square feet of wet lab space, flex offices and other amenities for those in the life sciences sector. Irazú Oncology and ETC Baltimore are among the entities that have already established offices there. Last week's ribbon-cutting came from years of effort across the University System of Maryland, the real estate firms, the local government and numerous private and nonprofit players. Many of those stakeholders came to celebrate and speak, including Mayor Brandon Scott. ➡️ Check out pictures of the new building here | As Trump settles into the White House for a second time, he's touted a lot of plans that could have implications at the local level. For example, he's been outspoken about plans to deport as many as 20 million immigrants from below the southern border. That's almost twice the number of undocumented immigrants that Pew Research estimated in 2024. Farmers in the US have started sounding the alarm that the loss of undocumented farmworkers would devastate the industry, which my colleague Holly Quinn wrote would then lead to food shortages. ➡️ Here's what else could happen as Trump moves back to DC | 📰 News Incubator: What else to know | • President Trump ordered a temporary halt on all new federal leases, permits and loans for offshore and onshore wind development. [Axios/Technical.ly] | Help inspire the next generation | Want to make a difference in our collective future? Be a virtual judge for the Diamond Challenge, the University of Delaware Horn Entrepreneurship’s platform for teens from around the world to learn entrepreneurship, engage with a like-minded community and compete for $100,000 in awards. There are two rounds of virtual judging, starting Jan. 29: During the first, judges review 6-8 written pitches and give feedback. In the second round in February, judges review 6-8 video pitches and give feedback. These early rounds culminate into a final in-person round at UD’s Limitless World Summit at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in May. If you’re part of the entrepreneur ecosystem and have a few hours to donate, you can sign up to be a judge for one or both rounds. “I’ve been a Diamond Challenge judge over the years,” said Technical.ly reporter Holly Quinn, “and seeing the work that these teenagers put in to solve problems from all corners of the world is awesome.” ➡️ Sign up to be a virtual judge here | Sponsored news: Point of interest | These startups believe automated technology deployed across large businesses can enhance work-life balance and operational impact. |
