Since the Pelicans drafted Zion Williamson No. 1 overall, it feels like we've barely got to watch him play. He suited up in 24 games his rookie season, which got off track before it began because of a right knee injury. This season, Williamson's third, has felt eerily familiar. He's sidelined with a right foot injury this time, and it very well could be until 2022 before he plays in a game again. Thursday, the Pelicans announced that Williamson is dealing with lingering soreness in his surgically repaired right foot, which explained why he was supposed to practice but didn't. The latest round of medical imaging revealed no structural issues. Nonetheless, it was deflating news. Pelicans coach Willie Green said the team will “see if the soreness goes away after a few days of dialing back.” Think about this: Williamson has not yet gone through a full practice under Green, who got the head coaching job in July. It's an unfortunate situation from a lot of different angles. Williamson has played in 85 games, and he has missed 83 games. Next week, he will have missed more games as a Pelican than he's played in. That's a grim milestone. "It's time to change the default setting" on the Pelicans star," columnist Scott Kushner wrote. "Missing Thursday’s practice was the first inarguable indication of a setback." Two thoughts: 1) That's hard to argue with 2) It's not great, Bob Carry on. -- Christian |
