How the Pelicans guard bailed his team out by connecting from 61 feet
The New Orleans Pelicans have dealt with serious late-game issues over the past three years. No matter which head coach has been in charge, they have struggled to execute in important moments. For a few seconds Wednesday, it looked as though they'd screwed up again. Up three with 4.5 seconds left, Garrett Temple was supposed to intentionally foul Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to send the Oklahoma City Thunder guard to the free-throw line for two shots. But Temple failed to wrap him up, and Alexander-Walker hit a deep 3 to tie the game. The Pelicans had to inbound the ball under their own basket with 1.4 seconds remaining. They had no timeouts. Josh Hart threw it to Devonte' Graham, who let a shot fly from 61 feet. Improbably, Graham banked it in. The shot was the NBA's longest game-winning buzzer beater in the past 25 years, according to ESPN Stats and Info. Graham was ebullient afterwards, and understandably so. Wednesday's game might've took place between the West's two worst teams, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a better ending to a regular-season game anywhere. -- Christian |
