| Man with log, 1928, photo by Tina Modotti / Colección y Archivo de Fundación Televisa, Ciudad de México. | | | | 17 November 2023 – 31 January 2024 | | | | | | | | Foam is delighted to announce a large overview and tribute to the work of the remarkable photographer Tina Modotti (1896-1942), an iconic figure in the world of photography, known for her unique blend of artistry and activism. She played an active role in the major political events of the 1920s and 1930s. Her portraits of iconic figures and artists like Diego Rivera or her partner Edward Weston provide a unique window into their world, while her depictions of Mexican peasants and laborers reflect her unwavering commitment to social causes. Born in Italy, Modotti's journey led her to the epicenter of early 20th-century art and politics, from her early days as a silent film actress in Hollywood to her connections within the Mexican art movements where Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera played a central role. With her camera, Modotti captured the sights and people of Mexico, focusing on women, folklore and religious art. Her raw photographic work firmly positions her as a central figure in the world of Modernist photography. However, Modotti's story extends far beyond artistic frameworks. Her connection to revolutionary ideals pushes her to the forefront of social change. After settling in Moscow and joining the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, she gave up photography altogether in 1931 to devote herself to politics. Modotti passed away in 1942 at the age of 45. For decades after her life her talent was overshadowed by mysteries and the absence of biographical information. It turned her life into a legend. The exhibition brings together close to 250 vintage prints on loan from 9 important international institutions and various private lenders and collections including illustrated magazines and original works by photographers from Modotti’s close circle, such as Edward Weston. Untold stories by unknown icons The exhibition Tina Modotti is the third in a series where Foam provides a platform to untold stories by unseen icons. Similar to Ernest Cole and Ara Güler earlier this year, Foam chooses to view history from a different perspective by providing a platform to artists who were overlooked or forgotten within the existing history of photography. For most of her life and after, the work by Tina Modotti was overshadowed by the influential and renowned photographer Edward Weston, who had introduced her to the field of photography. More recent research has found that photography by Weston and Modotti has often been difficult to distinguish from one another, sometimes wrongly assigning the famous Weston to a photograph. With this exhibition Foam provides Tina Modotti a stage to acknowledge her as one of the most dedicated and outstanding artists of her time. | |

This unique showcase delves into the world of contemporary female artists from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, capturing their candid perspectives from within the nation. The exhibition brings together the work of eight contemporary female artists who live or have lived in Saudi Arabia. It offers a unique perspective on a country that, by Western standards, is often seen as conservative and of which the accessibility to outsiders is sometimes underestimated. Fonāna serves as a platform for female artists from Saudi Arabia, offering an international audience a glimpse into their artistic perspectives as they navigate the multifaceted aspects of contemporary Saudi society, which include unique societal norms and local dynamics. Through their work they express personal concerns and explore their ideals.

| Yoko in spring, Tokyo 2016 © Meg Hewitt Courtesy Anne Clergue Galerie | | Meg Hewitt » Tokyo is Yours | | 18 November 2023 – 27 January 2024 | | An exhibition in cooperation with Anne Clergue Gallery | | | | | | | | CHAUSSEE 36 Photo Foundation is thrilled to present the solo exhibition "Tokyo is Yours" by the Australian photographer Meg Hewitt, featuring the artist’s work for the first time in Germany. Meg Hewitt, born in 1973 in Sydney, Australia, studied sculpture, painting and media. Since 2010 she has dedicated herself to photography. "Tokyo is Yours" is a black-and-white series that came into being between 2015 and 2017 during her travels through Tokyo. The cycle shows Hewitt’s deep reflection on Japan and the uncertainties and fragility that followed after the catastrophe in Fukushima. The ecological disaster of 2011 almost led to the evacuation of Tokyo, a city with more than 13 million residents. The title “Tokyo is yours” derives from a graffiti that had been written on the city wall. The photographer finds her inspiration in manga and movies. It is life in the streets of Tokyo that particularly interest her. The scenes which Meg Hewitt embeds in her film have movie-like qualities. People converge, and odd situations appear and fade away again. Meg had travelled to Japan seven times between 2015 and 2017. Every day she would walk through the city for twelve hours, taking strolls through parks, stopping by at night bars and the animal park, and traveling to Fukushima or visiting the seafront. She captured the small details that spontaneously caught her interest and eternalized the habitants she encountered. The fact that she can neither speak and read Japanese, nor understand conversations, gave her a feeling of absolute freedom and creativity. The people she met and the scenes she attended were transformed into symbols, archetypes, and metaphors. The photographer Daido Moriyama, whose work M… | |

| Installation view, Astrid Lowack Paradise in Mind ARTCO 2023 | | Astrid Lowack » Paradise in Mind | | ... until 25 November 2023 | | | | | | | | "To have paradise in mind, is after all, something wonderful, to look forward to it likewise.... it can of course also be seen as something final - depending on the point of view... just as my pictures always combine something positive and something negative - and you perceive what you want to see...", the artist explains with reference to the exhibition title. Visiting the gallery, viewers are invited to turn off their minds and fully engage with the large-scale works of the photo artist. They provide access to an alien world into which one balances with uncertain footsteps. The further you move, the more you loose connection to established color contexts, to familiar forms and their proportions. Your mind inevitably gravitates to this supernatural experience, of natural phenomena that no longer seem to fit into this world. The artist normally works outside amidst nature. There the artist finds all the elements that she needs for the “transcendent” image effect she is striving for, beyond normal sensory experience: light and shade, water and movement. The duration of the photographic process is open, it can last between a few minutes and several hours. This often results in several thousand photographs. The artist chooses some of these, which she then treats in two steps. Firstly she selects a section as a valid picture composition, and secondly she reduces or intensifies the colors inherent in the image. Astrid Lowack, born in Bamberg in 1969, originally studied Industrial Design - but has long since crossed the formal boundaries of applied design. Her work could rather be described as a part of "subjective photography," which Otto Steinert founded at the beginning of the 1950s with an expli… | |

| Gerry Johansson 'Steel construction under the Manhattan bridge in Brooklyn New York, USA, 1983', 1983 Gelatin silver contact print Image size: 20.2 x 25.2 cm Open Edition © Gerry Johansson | | Stepping Stones: Three Photographic Journeys | | Guido Guidi » Gerry Johansson » Mark Ruwedel » | | ... until 30 November 2023 | | | | | | | | "Stepping Stones: Three Photographic Journeys" connects the work of three photographers: Gerry Johansson, Guido Guidi and Mark Ruwedel. Focusing on a specific journey by each artist, three distinct conceptual, and personal, approaches to capturing place unfold. Gerry Johansson realised his series Motel Prints (1983) during a coast-to-coast long trip, beginning in Los Angeles in May 1983 and ending in New York, via Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Arkansas to Memphis, meeting with renowned photographers of the time, Robert Adams, Richard Benson, Gary Winogrand and William Eggleston, among others. Taking photographs daily with his 8x10" camera, he would develop film in the evening in his motel rooms, making contact prints from select negatives by placing a glass plate on top of the printing paper and turning on the room light for a few seconds. Central to Johansson's presentation is a new portfolio, "Coast to Coast", comprising 10 gelatin silver contact prints and an accompanying booklet produced by Imagebeeld Edition, Brussels. Gerry Johansson (b.1945 in Örebro, Sweden) is one of Sweden's most renowned photographers. Working mostly in black and white, and favouring the square format, Johansson is attracted to the neglected details of urban space. He is known for portraying quiet small towns around the world in the USA, Sweden, Italy, Japan, Germany and Spain. Johansson has produced a large number of books including the recently published 'American Winter' (2018) and 'Spanish Summer' (2022), both MACK. He has been awarded the Region Skånes kulturpris (2012) and the Lars Tunbjörk Prize (2019). In May 1974, a newlywed Guido Guidi travelled to S… | |

From November 16 to 19, 2023, BASE Milano will host a series of exhibitions and a three-day symposium examining the profound impact of artificial intelligence (A.I.) on human existence and the creation of images, complemented by satellite events at the city's finest galleries. Continuing its journey dedicated to shaping a more just and inclusive society through visual literacy, PhotoVogue invited artists from around the world to submit work that challenges the traditional notions of beauty and celebrates diversity through photographs and A.I.-generated images. The resulting exhibitions “What is beauty” and “What is beauty A.I” feature work by 53 artists, including the creative duo Togo Yeye, Chiron Dung, Luisa Dörr and Salome Gomis Trezise. The thought-provoking exhibitions “Uncanny Atlas: Image in the age of A.I.” and ‘Eternal Loops’ further explore how AI is reshaping photography and video, reality, and perception, inviting viewers to confront uncharted territories within an evolving world, featuring works by Michael Christopher Brown, Ali Cha’aban, Laurie Simmons and Pierre Zandrowicz among others. “Our intention is to address the ethical, aesthetic, and political implications raised by this revolutionary technology. Together, we will explore A.I.'s potential for reshaping our understanding of creativity, human existence, and the very essence of how we communicate and convey our visions to the world” – Alessia Glaviano, Head of Global PhotoVogue and Director of PhotoVogue Festival THE SYMPOSIUM The panels will take place on Nov 17-19 at BASE Milano, and will be made available on PhotoVogue platform. Confirmed speakers include: Refik Anadol | Giacomo Rizzolatti | Fred Ritchin | Michael Christopher Brown | Mutale Nkonde | Charles Traub | Charlie Engman | Carlijn Jacobs | Bryan Huynh | Ferdinando Verderi | Filippo Venturi | Margaret Zhang | Alessandra Sala | Mel McVeigh | Lydia Mendola | Paolo Benanti | Santiago Lyon | Paola Mieli | Florian Koenigsberger | Cyril Foiret | Millie Tran | Giuseppe De Bellis | Guido Noto La Diega | Paolo Bestagini | Nicki Lees | Zahra Rasool | Gea Politi | Francesco Bonami THE EXHIBITIONS What is Beauty? Throughout its past Open Calls, PhotoVogue festival has celebrated the female gaze, searched for the next great fashion image makers, highlighted diversity behind and in front of the camera, explored masculinity, reframed history, and consistently challenged stereotypes, clichés, and homogeneous representations. Continuing its journey dedicated to shaping a more just and inclusive society through visual literacy, PhotoVogue invited artists from around the world to submit work that challenges the traditional notions of beauty. What is Beauty/A.I. Featuring 13 artists whose A.I.-generated image submissions earned widespread acclaim from the jury, this exhibition delves into the festival’s overarching theme, “What Makes Us Human? Image in the Age of A.I.” While distinct from traditional photography, these artworks highlight the profound intersection of technology and human creativity, inviting profound contemplation of the boundless possibilities of A.I. in reshaping the artistic landscape and its impact on human expression in the digital era. Uncanny Atlas: Image in the Age of A.I. This exhibition aims to be a principle of cartography of this new world. And it does so through an investigation of how AI is changing, along with image production, our idea of photography, and inevitably also that of reality. Above all, the exhibition is an invitation to confrontation, at the intersection of many possible readings of a still largely empty map, where around the small known world there are still large, obscure areas, yet to be explored. Eternal Loops In the hands of the thirteen artists featured in this video exhibition, we voyage even deeper into this paradigm. Their work conjures dreamlike, occasionally nightmarish tales that teeter on the precipice of recognition and innovation. These contemporary visual metaphors form a symbiotic relationship with the familiar imagery of our collective past. The resultant sensation of familiarity takes on a disconcerting quality, an intrinsic facet of the artistic gambit these creators play. Spanish Women: A Contemporary Portrait of Strength and Beauty This exhibition celebrates the remarkable results of PhotoVogue’s inaugural Open Call in Spain done in collaboration with PHotoESPAÑA, the country’s most prestigious photography festival. PhotoVogue and Vogue Spain called upon artists from around the globe to submit their works, defying conventional norms and presenting fresh visual narratives. Condéfuture The festival will featured selected works from CondéFuture students. CondéFuture, led by Condé Nast’s creative and editorial teams, is a new global initiative that aims to inspire and nurture future generations of multimedia creative talent. Launched in New York City in 2021 in partnership with the non-profit organization Educational Alliance, the program targets high school students from underrepresented communities providing a free, two-year enrichment and mentorship program, led by talent within the Condé Nast community. Eye Mama On the evening of the 16th, an engaging conversation awaits as part of the festival’s enriching program. Join us for a thought-provoking dialogue with Karni Arieli, a photographer and director, renowned for founding the transformative Eye Mama movement alongside several contributors of the Eye Mama book. This discussion aligns seamlessly with the festival’s theme “What Makes Us Human.” In addition to the conversation, a slideshow of images from the Eye Mama book will be on view in the exhibition space during the festival.

| New York © Jean-François Mollière | | Jean-François Mollière » New York - Chicago | | ... until 20 November 2023 | | | | | | | | A photographic research synonymous with multiple quests "Jean-François Mollière, a photographer, freelance reporter and journalist from le Mans, has collaborated on numerous books and magazines in the fields of art, sports and architecture. As an artistic director, he also designs photographic installations for public and private places. These commissioned works necessarily bear the imprint of his photographic research. In 30 years of photographic research, Jean-François Mollière has never ceased to break away from habit, to go where the imagination becomes stronger. To beat back the ineluctability of finitude, to resist, inexorably. We recognize in his photography, images, icons very inspired by cinema and painting. | |

| OLAF OTTO BECKER COASTAL ROCKS, CORNWALL, ENGLAND, 2023 ARCHIVAL PIGMENT PRINT ON ALUDIBOND, DIPTYCH 180 x 149 cm / 70 3/4 x 58 2/3 inch Edition of 2 + 1 ap Courtesy Galerie Nikolaus Ruzicska und Olaf Otto Becker | | Olaf Otto Becker » | | 17 November, 2023 – 12 January, 2024 | | | | | | | | "I want to create a window on what I have seen", Olaf Otto Becker (b. Travemünde, D, 1959) says about the imposing landscape pictures taken all over the world in which, for over thirty years, he has recorded the changes in nature. The unifying theme in his most recent series of works is the North Atlantic Gulf Stream, which flows along Europe’s western coastlines northward from Spain until it sinks to the bottom of the sea east of Greenland. In the ongoing project, begun in 2019, Olaf Otto Becker uses his camera to capture both primordial landscapes that owe their existence to nature alone and changes wrought by humans that have become imprinted on the scenery. He takes up to fifty individual shots of a chosen motif from a variety of perspectives and vantage points, which he then “stitches together” on the computer in a painstaking postproduction process to obtain the final image. This technique gives Olaf Otto Becker's works an unrivaled depth of focus, making them precise renditions of what he has seen: each discoloration in the landscape, each rock fold, each breaking wave stands out. In the exhibition, large-format depictions of giant rock formations that rise from the sea to majestic dominance, vouchsafing vistas of the endless horizon as though seen through a curtain, contrast with ephemeral “natural drawings” in the sands of beaches. These pictures evince a graphical quality, balancing between abstraction and figuration. The striking phenomena are engendered by the rising and falling tides wherever different strata of sand abut. When the water recedes, delicate shapes, patterns, and lineaments remain that suggest drawings made by human hands. Olaf Otto Becker's camera im… | |

Munich, D, 1962) are on display in the gallery’s upstairs showroom. The technically complex silkscreen prints on epoxy resin have the aura of luminous paintings fixed on the support medium by photographic means. "Light, to me, is a symbol of love, hope, and salvation, of finding new guidance in this dark and gloomy world," Giovanni Castell emphasizes. The intense shimmering colors and the three-dimensional structure endow the works with a blazing radiance and a beguiling evocation of spatial depth. They pose a challenge to our visual habits while eliciting a kind of nostalgia rooted in our cultural memory. Pictures full of intensity and bracing emotional power are reminiscent of an ideal world steeped in utopian visions and a creative gesture that blends figurative elements with abstract landscapes. Their deliberately painterly style reveals Giovanni Castell's admiration for the American painter Mark Rothko, a widely hailed pioneer of color field painting, which grapples with the manifestations of color and their integration into a compelling system within the composition.

With his epochal project People of the 20th Century, which spanned several decades, August Sander not only set new standards in the portrait photography of his time. With his equally humanistically, sociologically and aesthetically motivated undertaking, he continues to inspire subsequent generations of photographers and artists to this day. | | | | | | | | The high-quality selection of more than 210 lots includes highlights, icons and rarities from 160 years. The discovery of a portrait of Gustav Klimt can certainly be described as a photo-historical sensation. The photograph by FRIEDRICH VIKTOR SPITZER from 1905 has until now been unknown and displays extreme precision in the geometry of the picture as well as in the balance of light and dark. It shows the main representative of Art Nouveau in expressive characterisation, to which the staging of the hands also contributes. The auction also includes works by RUDOLF KOPPITZ (a.o. the famous "Movement Study" from 1925), TRUDE FLEISCHMANN (with a portrait of Max Reinhardt from 1928), ANDRÉ KERTÉSZ (with "Satiric Dancer", 1926), AUGUST SANDER (with one of his most iconic photographs - "The Bricklayer", 1928), ERNST HAAS (with a unique vintage print from "Homecoming Prisoners", 1947), WEEGEE ("The Critic", 1943), ROBERT FRANK ("Candy Store, 86th Street", 1955), MARIO GIACOMELLI ("Dancing Priests", 1962), PHILIPPE HALSMAN ("Dalí Portfolio", 1948-1964), GÜNTER BRUS ("Strangulation", 1968), ALFONS SCHILLING ("Chicago" from the series "Burning Cars", 1968), ERWIN WURM ("Jakob, Jakob fett", 1994), REN HANG (2 signed prints, China c. 2010). Another focal point is the second part of 100 exhibition prints from the collection "In Our Time". Presented around 1990, this touring exhibition was the largest group show to date of the legendary Magnum photo agency, with around 280 photographs, and brings together outstanding works by the most important Magnum photographers such as HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON, BRUCE DAVIDSON, JOSEF KOUDELKA, WERNER BISCHOF, RENÉ BURRI, ROBERT CAPA, ELLIOTT ERWITT, SEBASTIÃO SALGADO, INGE MORATH, ERNST HAAS and many others. The large-format b/w baryta prints and colour prints using the dye-transfer process are all signed or stamped. A special thanks goes to our independent expert Simone Klein, who has been an internationally recognised figure in photography for many years. She was Head of Photography at Kunsthaus Lempertz for 9 years, and from 2007 to 2015 she was Director of the Photography Department at Sotheby's Europe, leading auctions in Paris, London and New York. She was sales director at Magnum Photos since 2015. Since 2018, she has been working as an independent consultant for photography.
