Foam proudly presents Blessings from Mousganistan, an exhibition by self-taught photographer Mous Lamrabat (Morocco, 1983). Beauty and a sense of hope are central to Lamrabat’s work. His photographs are playful and surrealistic, every so often subtly provocative, but always vibrant and fun. His work is exhilarating and at times a confronting fusion of his diasporic life, using beauty and humour to create powerful new narratives related to sensitive issues like racism, religion and women’s rights. In Blessings from Mousganistan, the artist shares a message of love through a colourful and eclectic visual experience.

The photographer Lothar Wolleh has been in close contact with European avant-garde artists since the early 1960s. It is less well known that "hybrid" works were also created as a result of collaboration: Wolleh's photographs, which were reworked by those portrayed.

The exhibition "LOTHAR WOLLEH – DUO" presents a selection of these works. With contributions by Sonia Delaunay, Lucio Fontana, Gotthard Graubner, Adolf Luther, Heinz Mack, Christian Megert, Dieter Roth and Günther Uecker, among others.

Lothar Wolleh Raum contains the archive of the photographer Lothar Wolleh. The aim is to make all aspects of his work accessible, such as photographs, photo-art volumes and editions, and to show the relevance of his work in a broad international art-historical context through exhibitions, events and publications.

Various photographic installations throughout the city of Clervaux transform it into an open-air gallery. Discover the work of national and international contemporary photographers in an extraordinary setting: on the walls of houses, in flowering gardens and along the narrow streets.

Six different visions invite us on a journey, each uniquely opening up a world that unfolds in photography and lingers in our imagination. A play of momentary dialogues strikes up between the images, their open air exhibition setting – as it changes with the seasons - and the viewer that contemplates them. The photographers transform the image of the city and the gaze we bring to bear upon it by way of reflections from elsewhere.

The 2022-2023 photographic season celebrates the diversity of Luxembourg creation through the work of six contemporary photographers. On the market square, we set out with Bruno Oliveira to Cap Vert, via a documentary collection shot through with personal sensations, while along the rise to the church, Véronique Kolber presents a series of American street scenes, captured through her lens, that resonate in our cinematographic memory. Behind the church, Marie Capesius, by way of calm and sensual images, explores the question of paradise and the contrasts between the two worlds that co-exist on the Ile du Levant. Inspired by the methods of archaeology, Boris Loder collects objects, examines them, and thus condenses the identities of the City of Luxembourg’s various neighbourhoods and their stereotypes into sculptural photographs that can be seen in the arcades of Grand- Rue.

On the Castle concourse, we are greeted by Marc Schroeder’s black and white minimalist photographs capturing urban landscapes which seem to follow a strict graphic logic. While in the Castle gardens, the women portrayed by Jeannine Unsen share with us a moment that is both intimate and intense. Thus, by way of these encounters, different paths, readings and connections interweave to keep us questioning.

I See a Darkness is a multi-media exhibition probing the complex historical relationship between photography, cinema and science. Emerging from the trans-disciplinary art practice of Katherine Waugh & Fergus Daly, this new body of work builds on their research-based, philosophically-framed past projects in film, writing and artistic events, drawing on material that is often overlooked or hidden: shadow archives, neglected cultural narratives in film, art and literature, as well as ‘disappeared’ or challenging areas of knowledge.

The artists have created a unique gallery iteration of the film project I See a Darkness , framed by photographic prints, videos, archival images and publications. The film and exhibition materials present an artistic exploration of the impact that Irish-born Lucien Bull's chrono-photographic experiments had on the interwoven developments of image-capture aesthetics and science throughout the 20th century. Bull, born in Dublin in 1876, was made director of the prestigious Institut Marey in Paris in 1914 and President of the Institute of Scientific Cinematography in 1948. The exhibition explores how new technologies of vision were from the outset aggressively instrumentalised by the military-industrial complex for its own ends, as the 20th century quest for an aesthetic ‘sublime’ in still and moving images collided with the scientific discovery of an ‘atomic sublime’. The atomic shadow photographs found in Hiroshima and Nagasaki surely testified to, in…

Following the critically acclaimed live performance Amazing Grace / RGB at the Apollo Theater in 2019, Paul Pfeiffer and the University of Georgia Redcoat Band return to New York for the premiere of a new audio-visual installation. Titled Red Green Blue after the image display system based on the human perception of color, the film considers how multiple channels of sensory information are brought into alignment by presenting the Georgia Bulldogs stadium as a broadcast studio. This film is the first chapter of a forthcoming three-part installation.

The sports stadium is a site imbued with the potential to fortify national, regional, or community-based models of identity.[1] Bombarded with carefully orchestrated stimuli, the spectator is immersed in a multi-sensory experience intended to incite an emotional response. In Red Green Blue, Pfeiffer edits audio and visual recordings of the Redcoat Marching Band performing the live musical soundtrack to a football game, examining the mechanics of the spectacle through close- up footage of band members and their directors during and between periods of play. Isolated from the synchronized stadium, the minute corporeal movements of individual musicians, the abrupt stopping and starting of the musical score, and the incomprehensible instructions exchanged through headsets disrupt the intuitive flow of perception and cognition.[2]

Pfeiffer lived and taught at the University of Georgia from 2016 to 2019. While broadly questioning the definition of reality in the age of social media, Pfeiffer also engages the specific circumstances of the Georgia Bulldogs stadium. Just beyond the stadium walls is a cemetery, where the roar of the crowd and the band echo eerily among tombstones, mixing w…

The 12th edition of the Carmignac Photojournalism Award is dedicated to Venezuela and its hardships at the individual, social and ecological levels. Chaired by Quentin Bajac, Director of the Jeu de Paume, the jury met in November 2021 and awarded Fabiola Ferrero.

The exhibition Venezuela, The Wells Run Dry by Fabiola Ferrero, laureate of the 12th Carmignac Photojournalism Award, explores the disappearance of the Venezuelan middle class. A prosperous democracy in the 1960s and 1970s, the country is struggling to extricate itself from a deep economic crisis, marked by the plummeting price of oil, endemic corruption and hyperinflation. Seven consecutive years of economic collapse and political crisis have widened the inequality gap and destroyed the middle class.

The Venezuelan photographer set out to document years of wealth that now exist only in memory. She travelled to places that were once symbols of prosperity, looking for the remnants of a vanished economic success story. Her reportage took her across the country, photographing the disappearing oil and salt industries and the communities that depend on them, the looted and abandoned universities, and the last traces left behind by Venezuelans who decided to leave the country for a better future. Combining archival images, videos and photographs, Ferrero creates a visual capsule that documents the economic downturn in her country and the consequences for its people. She compares her project to trying to photograph a lake before it becomes a desert. "If there is a time to document and leave a trace of the memory of who we were, it is now."

New York Street Portraits comprises a selection of photographs by Brooklyn-based fine art photographer Amy Touchette, who has spent the past twenty years making street portraits. The exhibition includes photographs from her latest monograph, Personal Ties: Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, a series of Rolleiflex street portraits she made in her adopted neighborhood from 2015-2018. Published in January 2022 by Schilt Publishing (Amsterdam), the book includes a foreword by photographer Larry Fink and an afterword by third-generation Bed-Stuy resident, C. Joi Sanchez. Signed copies will be available.

The exhibition also includes photographs from her impromptu street portrait series, Street Dailies. Begun in 2012 and ongoing, with over 2,800 street portraits and counting, these candid iPhone images are made and released regularly by Touchette on Instagram. Her deck of poker-sized playing cards, NYC Street Dailies, are culled from this series and will also be available. A celebration of New York City’s denizens, each card features a unique portrait of a New Yorker, and each suit comprises some of her favorites muses: grannies (spades), workers (diamonds), twins…

The photographer Thomas Jorion adds with the series "No Man’s Time" a chapter to a remarkable body of work. This work on the ruin invites us to question ourselves in front of the sublime of places whose history can only be read in their erosion and their abandonment. Devoured by the surrounding nature, the palaces, cinemas, factories are memento mori which proposes us a journey in which several temporal frames are linked.

The ruin becomes the center of a wider reflection on our relationship to our environment and to our common history. The exhibition No Man’s Time presents a particular series of the artist’s work of the artist’s work, the ruins photographed with a large format camera are here often disproportionate constructions that have never been completed. Like a nuclear reactor wide open to the sky, their function is revealed in hollows, or leaves the viewer facing an architectural ambition without conclusion.

The places, passed from building sites to ruins, are immediately imagined and immediately abandoned. The contemporary concrete of places that have no more history than their conception is offered to the sprawling nature, inviting us to think about our relationship to the imprint that our generation leaves on the world we inhabit.

For the first time, Thomas Jorion will unveil a new work of sculptures inspired by these places in dialogue with eleven large format photographs. The sculpture is the opportunity for the artist to seize a form in space and to give body to his privileged material: concrete. The monoliths explore various aspects of this material, notably that of recording photographic images.

This work will be exhibited at the Esther Woerdehoff Gallery in Paris from September 29 to November …

During Paris Photo week, Galerie Miranda will be presenting selected works by Jan Groover (b.1943-d.2012), whose retrospective exhibition opens at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson on 8 November 2022. Groover's works are presented at Galerie Miranda in a two-person exhibition with Jo Ann Callis (b. 1940) and featuring selected vintage prints by Groover, notably from her famous series "Kitchen Still Lifes" (1979), alongside contemporary prints from the series "Early Color" (1976) by Callis.

In New York in the mid 70s, Jan Groover created "Kitchen Still Lifes" series from a kitchen sink piled up with fork tines, butter knife blades, scalloped cake tins and indoor plants. In 1979 an image from this series graced the cover of ArtForum magazine: according to critic Andy Grundberg, it announced that “photography had arrived in the artworld - complete with a marketplace to support it." At the same time on the west coast, in Los Angeles, Jo Ann Callis was producing her seminal series "Early Color", influenced notably by Paul Outerbridge but also Hans Bellmer and Pierre Molinier. Creating cinematographic scenes with household props, Callis sought to capture the tensions and anxiety of a claustrophobic domestic environment where freedom, pleasure and curiosity are bridled.

Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation and Goethe-Institut Paris show works by students of Beate Gütschow and Alex Grein.

As part of the exhibition series "La jeune photographie allemande", this year, students of the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne are showing photographic-installative works under the title "The End/ Not the End?" that deal with the global dimension and complexity of the ecological crisis. The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation organises the exhibition series annually in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Paris.

The artists, supervised by Prof. Beate Gütschow and Alex Grein, develop poetic narratives of doom in which grief is paired with a will to act. The aim of the art is to make the invisible visible. The exhibition will open at the Goethe-Institut Paris, on 10 November 2022 at 18:30 during the international photography fair PARIS PHOTO.

The artistic positions of the exhibition "The End / Not the End?" reflect on the progressing destruction of our planet as well as the resulting need for action. They question artificial intelligences about the future of the world, describe the climate crisis as a temporally and spatially delimited hyper object and find new, haptic images for the dying of ecosystems, that are essential to the balance of nature and the planet. Their works address illegal waste disposal as well as the effects of coal mining or the permanent pollution of rivers through water use in large cities in Germany. They also impressively visualise the influence our consumer behaviour has on regions of other continents, be it the hunting of protected animals in Mongolia or the mining of lithium in Argentina. The images produced by the artists are also an emotional …

Mark Steinmetz started his career at MoMA in 1993 when, at the age of 32, he was one of four artists selected for New Photography 9 (together with Christopher Giglio, Boris Mikhailov and Beat Streuli). Since then, he has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, published over 20 monographs, and taught at some of America’s top MFA programs, including Yale and Hartford. Although he has photographed extensively in Italy and France, the foundation of his oeuvre is his portraits and landscapes of the American South, his homeland for the last two decades.

Steinmetz does not pretend to be avant-garde or an inventor. His pictures are committed to a documentary-humanistic black-and-white tradition that he inherited and that he would like to preserve and continue for the younger generation. His influences and connections range from Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange to later descendants Robert Frank, William Gedney, Roy DeCarava, Nicholas Nixon, Diane Arbus, Robert Adams, Judith Joy Ross, Thomas Roma, Gerry Winogrand and Helen Levitt.

Kominek Gallery is showing a selection of works from South Trilogy, wich were created between 1991 and 2009 and are published by Nazraeli Portland.

His publications South East, Greater Atlanta and South Central are available at the the exhibition.

The exhibition Histoires d’eau by Isabelle Hayeur brings together photographs and videos that explore various issues related to water. The theme of water, an essential element that sustains life on our planet, has run through the work of this artist from the very beginning.

Political and deeply poetic at the same time, the pieces taken from the Underworlds series draw attention to the degradation of bodies of water. The artist’s uncommon perspective and the grand scale of her photographs take us to the heart of the matter. In Florida, Hayeur photographed manatees as she swam with them in the brackish waters around the city of Crystal River. These tranquil mammals of the tropics have practically no predators but they are threatened by human activity, particularly due to injuries from boat propellers.

The protection of water and aquatic ecosystems is one of the main environmental concerns of today’s society. In the series Le Camp de la Rivière and Dépayser, Hayeur has photographed militants who are fighting for a healthier environment and a more equitable world. She dwells on the question of citizens’ struggles while taking a critical look at human intervention that contributes to the alteration of landscapes and the deterioration of habitats.

Hayeur’s recent work explores the drought and water crisis that have been plaguing the American West for the past twenty years. In California, she has photographed the Salton Sea, a heavily polluted landlocked body of water that is slowly dying. Her video Between Wind and Water looks at water management as it relates to the watering of the golf courses of the Palm Desert. Situated between hope and denunciation, Isabelle Ha…

Paris Photo, the leading international fair dedicated to the photographic medium, returns to the Grand Palais Éphémère in the heart of Paris from November 10 to 13th, 2022. Since 1997, the fair has worked to develop and support photographic creation by promoting the work of gallery owners, publishers and artists.

The 25th edition of Paris Photo is organized around 3 sectors bringing together 183 exhibitors from 31 countries.

In the main sector gathers 134 galleries from 29 countries, including 18 new galleries compared to 2021. The Curiosa sector, dedicated to emerging art, brings together 16 galleries (including 11 new) from 9 countries under the direction of guest curator Holly Roussell.

The book sector gathers 34 publishers (including 4 new) from 9 countries, offering unique editions and avant-premiere book releases with a signature program bringing together the greatest names in photography from all over the world.

The Elles x Paris Photo fair path, orchestrated this year by Federica Chiocchetti promotes the visitbility of women artists and their contribution to the history of photography. A program of conversations, exhibitions and prizes is offered to visitors allowing them to develop their knowledge of the medium.

Thanks to the lasting engagement and support of BMW and J.P. Morgan Private Bank, official partners, and the fair's many public and private partners, Paris Photo reaffirms for its 25th edition its role as the most important annual meeting place for photography.

Polycopies 2018

Since 2014 Polycopies has been organizing a fair with 40 specialized international photography book publishers once a year.
Founded and directed by Laurent Chardon and Sebastian Hau, Polycopies is an non-profit for the distribution and promotion of the photographic edition (books, multiples, paper objects and experimental publishing practices) which becomes a large ephemeral bookshop, a space completely dedicated to photo books, during the week of Paris-Photo
Although Polycopies is first of all a market place, it has also become an important spot to meet with a lively crowd of amateurs, collectors, photographers and publishers of different horizons sharing and confronting their ideas on photography, discussing the practices of publishing, exchanging on discoveries made and favorite books, or even showing their book dummies and new projects.

The upcoming OstLicht Photo Auction is bound to cause quite a stir. "We are very pleased with the extraordinary number of consignments that have allowed my team and me to put together a particularly comprehensive and high-quality program," says gallery owner Peter Coeln. "This strong interest demonstrates that OstLicht has succeeded in achieving a special status among the multitude of auction houses."

One of the most extraordinary lots is undoubtedly by Rudolf Koppitz, who in his legendary Movement Study staged a nude dancer in front of a triangular formation of dark-robed figures. Combining stylized elegance and perfect craftsmanship, the work, created in 1925, exhibits elements of modernism as well as of the Vienna Secession and Wiener Werkstätte, capturing the cultural currents of the Austrian avant-garde more aptly than almost any other.

A similarly timeless fascination emanates from the portrait of Cain, created by Wilhelm von Gloeden in 1902 in Taormina, Sicily. The nude of a young, introverted man is one of the most important and beautiful motifs of the German photographer and was in such great demand during his lifetime that he even had an etching made of it. Up for auction is a large-format print made in 1913, dated, stamped and signed by the artist himself, with an estimated price of € 30,000 – 35,000.

Another classic in the history of photography was created by the exceptional photographer William Klein, who died just a few weeks ago. Klein revolutionized the world of fashion photography like no other with his unusual cropping, double exposures, and his use of light and fog as visual stylistic devices. As his 1960 image Pont Alexander III + Marines illustrates, he was also one of the first fashion photographers to free his models from the static studio atmosphere and photograph them outdoors. The signed print is of one of his most famous shots for Vogue magazine. (Estimated price: € 8.000 - 10.000)

Under the title Futurism, a work by the versatile Italian artist, designer and inventor Bruno Munari comes up for auction, far less known to the general public but all the more appreciated among knowledgeable collectors. Considered an enfant terrible, the artist joined the "second Futurist movement" in the late 1920s and, in addition to his "useless machines" and abstract geometric works, created extraordinary photographs in which he focused on the movement of objects rather than the objects themselves. The well-preserved vintage print, a unique piece from the 1930s, is signed by Munari in conspicuous red ink (Estimated price: € 4,000 – 5,000)

The exceptional Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki is represented in the auction by one of his most extraordinary works. Taken in 1997, the untitled image from the series Tokyo Comedy shows the theatrically staged shot of a couple and is one of the few in which a male protagonist is the subject of his works. The impressive full-body tattoo of the man, which in this manner war for decades reserved for members of the yakuza, forms a work-of-art-within-a- work-of-art and was signed directly on the skin by the well-known tattoo artist Horitoku. On the back, the large-format gelatin silver print bears Araki's signature. (Estimated price: € 15,000 – 18,000)

Last but not least, the next OstLicht Photo Auction will feature an absolute premiere: Alexander Rodchenko's perhaps most famous picture The Girl with the Leica is considered one of the most influential works of the "New Vision" and had never been offered in an Austrian auction before. With its diagonal cut and dramatic top view, it exemplifies the new perspectives created by the handy 35mm camera, which the versatile Russian artist and doctor wanted to use to "revolutionize optical recognition." The print from the 1950s bears the title, the photographer's handwritten name, and his stamp on the reverse. (Estimated price: € 2,800 - 3,200)

Further highlights of the upcoming OstLicht Photo Auction:
  • The model Dorian Leigh and the wrestler Maurice Tillet by Irving Penn from 1946. The vintage print is in excellent condition. (Estimated price: € 8,000 – 10,000)
  • The image of a painter, who in 1953 cheerfully gave the Eiffel Tower a new paint job and helped photographer Marc Riboud to become a member of famous Magnum agency. The large format gelatin silver print is signed and dated by the photographer. (Estimated price: € 4,400 – 5,000)
  • An icon of Viennese Actionism is the very rare box of 13 B&W photographs in which Ludwig Hoffenreich captured Rudolf Schwarzkogler's legendary 3rd Action in 1965. Printed in 1975 from the original negatives, the gelatin silver prints are signed by Edith Adam and in perfect condition. (Estimated price: € 20,000 – 24,000)
  • The portfolio Transfusion by Günter Brus. The 12 chromo prints of photographs taken by Ludwig Hoffenreich in 1965 are the first color photographs ever taken in an action by Günter Brus. In addition to the theme of birth, the photographs also include elements from earlier actions like the "self-mutilation". The resulting ambivalence between erotic and destructive motifs give this action a specific status in Brus' oeuvre. The 12 chromo prints were printed from the original negatives and have been signed by the artist. (Estimated price: € 20.000 - 24.000)
  • A gelatin silver print of the famous photograph from Seville by Henri Cartier-Bresson, showing children playing behind a broken wall, signed by the photographer. (Estimated price: € 6.000 - 8.000)
  • The Dancing Priests, captured by Mario Giacomelli in his powerful series of photographs from Senigallia in 1962. The gelatin silver print is signed by the artist and bears a stamp of authenticity. (Estimated price: € 6,000 – 8,000)
  • The illustrated book Helmut Newton SUMO, which weighs more than 35 kilos complete with the book stand by Philippe Starck, which illuminates the photographer's entire career with around 400 photographs. The copy "05359" of the limited and now sold out edition is in mint condition and was personally signed by Newton. (Estimated price: € 5,000 – 7,000)
