Have you ever asked yourself why SHEIN is so cheap? Dominique Olivier loves clothes. She loves saving money. She doesn’t love arguably damaging business practices, with many questions being asked around the world about SHEIN. |

TreasuryONE Market Update Risk-on, risk-off. Now that you're hopefully thinking back to watching the Karate Kid movies, we can give you the bad news that the rand has moved above R19.00 again. All emerging market currencies came under pressure, so it's likely that the Middle East and related sentiment is the cause. Locally, CPI inflation data printed as expected at 5.4% for September, up from 4.8% in September but within the SARB's target band. This suggests that the SARB will hold off from any rate hikes at the moment. Gold is acting as the safe haven asset that many assume it is, trading at $1,950 per ounce. Brent Crude also jumped higher, trading at $91.51. TreasuryONE hosted a recent webinar for clients with ETM Analytics. The video is embedded below, or you can watch it on YouTube here>>> |

Pick n Pray A year-to-date chart of Shoprite vs. Pick n Pay is just going from bad to worse. The former is up 3.4% (a victim of a high valuation in a tough market) and the latter has tanked 55% (a victim of itself). Turnover at Pick n Pay might have grown 5.4% in the interim period, but trading profit has collapsed by 97.5%. In absolute terms, the entire Pick n Pay group made a trading profit of R31.8 million in the 26 weeks to 27th August! This is before various other line items (like net finance charges), taking it to a loss before tax of R837.2 million. There aren't many positives for Sean Summers to latch onto as he moves into the CEO role. Already, he's told the market that a turnaround is going to take a year or two to show much progress. Given the strength of Shoprite, even that feels ambitious to me. Pick n Pray, indeed. It's going to take a small miracle. Other updates came in from Accelerate Property Fund with the sale of two buildings, BHP with the sale of two mines (and a quarterly production update), EOH with financial results and Quilter with an update on fund flows in the UK.
