What it will take to reopen schools, and the consequences of (not) doing so.

Pivot Schooled

Hi,

Our last Pivot Schooled event will address “The Psychology of Recovery”: How the coronavirus could permanently change the way we work, learn, and live. The biggest questions surrounding the return to normalcy for many families hinge on the reopening of schools — or the indefinite transition to online learning. On September 2, Kara and Scott will interview two guests tackling these challenges head-on:

Dr. Wayne Frederick, President, Howard University

President Wayne Frederick

Howard University has announced it will resume classes fully online this fall. We’ll ask Dr. Frederick how his background as a medical doctor informed his decision-making calculus. We’ll also ask him how he’s approaching his role as leader of an HBCU (not to mention the alma mater of vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris) as the nation protests police violence against Black communities and grapples with health disparities put into sharp focus by the pandemic.

Austin Beutner, Superintendent, Los Angeles Unified School District

Austin Beutner

K12 schools across the nation face slashed budgets, fearful teachers, and mixed messages from local and federal authorities around reopening. We’ll talk with the leader of the second-largest public school system in the US about its decision to proceed online-only indefinitely and how it hopes to achieve effective learning without in-person instruction.
