| | I'm writing to ask for your help. We've all seen the recent headlines about The New York Times' decision to stop running all editorial cartoons. Now there is a growing debate around the world about the value of visual commentary and how important editorial cartoons are in these troubling times. In the past month, three of our top cartoonists have lost their newspaper jobs, Nate Beeler with the Columbus Dispatch, Rick McKee with the Augusta Chronicle and Patrick Chappatte with The International New York Times. More and more newspapers are dropping editorial cartoons entirely, and many are dropping their entire editorial pages. Editorial cartoonists are underpaid freelancers now, drawing for the love of their art form. Our Cagle.com site is of vital importance to editorial cartoonists around the world. As a fan and supporter of political cartoons we truly appreciate your past financial contribution. However, we would like to ask you to do more to help support political cartooning as an valuable and important art form by supporting Cagle.com through our Heroes Campaign. Even if you've contributed before, your support is needed now more than ever. Cagle.com has dropped advertising and is supported only by contributions by fans. We urge you to share our Heroes page with your family, friends and coworkers; tell your friends why you think our site is important enough to support. Editorial cartoonists are champions for Freedom of Speech, not just here in the U.S. but around the world. We are dedicated to providing an unbiased platform for cartoonists to contribute to the public debate regardless of their party affiliation, national origin or political views. Cagle.com is a crucial free tool used by educators across the country in Social Studies courses. Most of all, supporting Cagle.com, which has been the home for editorial cartoonists since 1996, directly helps the artists themselves. Help keep editorial cartooning a vibrant part of our national heritage in a time when visual commentary should be an important part of our public discourse. Sharing the word helps us speak Truth to Power! Thank you for your support! Daryl Cagle |
