Plenti’s Problem With Capturing Coalition Loyalty
 

About two and a half years ago, American Express launched Plenti — an attempt at a coalition loyalty program to help consumers build rewards points at a whole host of retailers. At first, things seemed to be going swimmingly, with over 36 million active users and 40 billion transactions in the first year. But, as of early 2018, merchants have dropped off — most recently Macy’s — and Plenti seems destined for the dead-letter office. What went wrong? As it turns out, retailers don’t want customers loyal to a coalition — they want customers who are loyal to them.
