The Tally
Mother first, now my wife.Â
Dead within a year.Â
A joke unfunny lifeÂ
has foisted on me here.
Past sixty, orphanhoodÂ
can't be unexpected.Â
It came: I understood.Â
Grief was calm, collected.
But that just months aheadÂ
there would be a secondÂ
farewell to be saidÂÂ
that I had not reckoned.
One, two: each blow hit home.Â
Each left the house more quiet.Â
Each time, the patient loamÂ
obtained some profit by it.
The orchestra has stopped.Â
But faintly, unabatingÂ
though the baton has dropped,Â
two notes go on vibrating.
One, two: insistent pairÂ
clinging to every thought.Â
Murmured to vacant air,Â
"One, two" adds up to nought.
One, two: my footsteps roamÂ
from empty street to street.Â
Some tireless metronomeÂ
sets the relentless beat.
One, two: the pace I keepÂ
requires no grace of art.Â
Whether I wake or sleep,Â
despoiled again, my heart
does all it knows to do:Â
as if it overheard,Â
it keeps the countÂone, twoÂ
will, till I make a third.
