Explorer plans expedition to discover what happened to Amelia Earhart In partnership with National Geographic, ocean archaeologist Robert Ballard will be going on a mission in August to the Pacific island Nikumaroro where aviator Amelia Earhart is believed to have emergency landed in 1937 during her historic and mysterious flight. Ballard is best known for recovering the Titanic shipwreck in 1985, and the planned expedition will be televised by National Geographic in October.
