My mom was the most committed person I knew.
My biological father who left when I was a year old was not committed.
I saw and felt the difference growing up and throughout my life.
We know when someone is committed or not.
Those who are committed focus on what they can give.
Those who are not committed focus on what they can get.
You also know when YOU are committed or not.
Commitment will cost you something.
Commitment requires service and sacrifice.
Whether it’s time, energy, money, attention, wants and needs, when you commit you are either giving something or giving up something.
To be your best you must be committed to what you are doing. To be your best for others you must be committed to them.
We often look around and point out that others are not committed and let their lack of commitment affect ours. But today I’m writing this because I want to encourage you to simply focus on your commitment. You be the committed one!
The other day while speaking to a professional baseball team during spring training I said, “I know you all have individual contracts and agents and your success and money is based on your performance but while you are here with your teammates, for this season at this time, decide to commit to each other. Give each other your best and serve and sacrifice for each other and watch how you all go to a higher level.”
Years ago, I was more like my biological father, not my mother. I wasn’t as committed as I should be. I was focused on me, not we. My wife told me she needed more of my commitment at home with her and the kids. At first, I was resistant. I called up my friend who was a basketball coach and said “Have you ever wanted a different team?” He laughed.
Yes, I wanted a different team but then I made a decision to commit more to my home team and focus on “We before me”. At the end of the year, I realized I didn’t need a different team. I needed to be a better leader.
My commitment made them better and it made me better.
Today, decide to be committed!
Ask yourself what will give today and what will you give up for you and your team?
Then commit to the person in the mirror. Yes, that’s you! Commit to YOU. Commit to the person in front of you. Commit to the moment. Commit to your family. Commit to your team!
Your commitment will make you and everyone around you better!
Have a great week. Lead Positive,
-Jon
