An astute queen, a strong-willed sister and a hidden wife ignite the truths of women’s lives |

Written by one of country’s leading contemporary playwrights, Hickson delves into the life of Elizabeth I, a passionate and devoted leader who navigated the slippery terrain of sex, power and beauty with precision. Then, from Feb 1, one of Shakespeare’s most notoriously gendered plays, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, gets a radical reassessment in a staging featuring Michelle Terry, artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe. The season closes with Thomas Middleton’s ‘Women Beware Women’ (from Feb 21), offering an intense glimpse inside the claustrophobic environs of the Florentine court, with a stonking cast that includes Thalissa Teixeira (‘Yerma’, Young Vic), Olivia Vinall (‘Othello’, National) and Tara Fitzgerald (‘Game of Thrones’). See them all in the gorgeously atmospheric candle-lit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and, who knows, maybe you’ll start planning your own revolution. | |
