The new standard represents one of the most significant recent changes to accounting standards and is expected to add visibility for investors and managers into the debts, operating expenses, and obligations of non-public companies.

ASC 842 requires that entities record nearly all leases on the balance sheet, replacing the previous standard which put capital leases on the balance sheet while simply recording operating leases on the income statement.
