Opéra Bastille: Season 2018-19

Opera Season

TRISTAN UND ISOLDE

Opéra Bastille
from September 29 to December 29, 2018

Richard Wagner’s composition of Tristan und Isolde goes far beyond any simple operatic gesture. His libretto transcends the medieval legend in a metaphysical view of love with its tensions and pessimism. Philippe Jordan conducts the saga of a love too huge for the material world.

LA TRAVIATA

Opéra Bastille
from September 29 to December 29, 2018

The ultimate romantic drama in opera history, La Traviata unravels the destiny of a fallen woman tormented by love and morality until the end of her life. Inspired by many pieces, Benoît Jacquot especially took inspiration from Édouard Manet's famous painting, Olympia, which also created a scandal when first shown.

CARMEN

Opéra Bastille
from April 11 to May 23, 2019

Bizet's wildly popular opera portrays violent passion under a blazing Spanish sun. The Paris Opera presents Calixto Bieito's new staging of 'Carmen', with a star-studded cast including Roberto Alagna, Jean-François Borras, Ksenia Dudnikova and Anita Rachvelishvili.

THE MAGIC FLUTE

Opéra Bastille
from April 27 to June 15, 2019

Celebrate Mozart's operatic depiction of pain and comfort, day triumphing over night, and the path of righteousness: The Paris Opera presents Mozart's final opera, 'The Magic Flute' in a production by Robert Carsen.

New to the Paris Opera Stage

SIMON BOCCANEGRA

Opéra Bastille
from November 15 to December 13, 2018

Don't miss this highly anticipated new production of Simon Boccanegra at the Opéra Bastille. Calixto Bieito, that most Shakespearean of opera directors, brings humanism and truth to a work haunted by gleaming images of the sea.

DON GIOVANNI

Palais Garnier
from June 13 to July 13, 2019

Of the three operas written with Da Ponte, Don Giovanni is undoubtedly the darkest and most desperate. The seducer and the characters surrounding him are breathless and frenzied. Mozart offers them his most sombre, suspenseful, extreme and yet perfect music.

Ballet Season Highlights

CINDERELLA

Opéra Bastille
From November 27, 2018 to January 2, 2019

Charles Perrault’s celebrated tale, set to music by Sergei Prokofiev, is transposed to a film set. In a series of references to the heroes of the American cinema, Rudolf Nureyev propels his Cinderella under the spotlights of Hollywood.

ROSAS

Palais Garnier
From March 4 - 14, 2019

When Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker worked on Violin Phase in New York in 1980, one piece of music alone besides Steve Reich’s was played in the studio: Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Thirty‑five years later, the choreographer continues her work with these pieces.

Concerts & Recitals

Palais Garnier

GREAT ARIAS & BALLET

Palais Garnier
December 30 and 31, 2018

Celebrate New Years Eve with excerpts from ballets and great opera arias. Famous soloists will perform under the baton of Dan Ettinger and the Paris Opera Ballet will show selected choreographies.

Philippe Jordan

MAHLER

Opéra Bastille
January 30, 2019

Philippe Jordan will conduct the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Paris in a series of concerts dedicated to famous Austrian composers of the 19th century. Don't miss the opportunity to hear this world-class orchestra under the baton of its musical director with one of the greatest Romantic symphonies.
