Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Combatting Inflation This week, we learned that inflation — driven by reckless government spending — surged to 7 percent in December, reaching its highest level in 40 years. American families can’t continue to shoulder the burden of skyrocketing costs at the gas pump and grocery store. That’s why I introduced a bill with Senator Thune (R-S.D.) to pump the brakes on government spending until inflation eases. A sound financial future requires wise financial action now. Championing Seniors’ Finances As our aging population grows, each day thousands of seniors are making financial decisions like when to collect social security or enroll in Medicare. As ranking member of the Senate Aging Committee, I held a hearing along with Chairman Casey (D-Pa.) on the importance of financial literacy for older Americans when making these decisions. Dorothea Bernique, the founder and executive director of Increasing H.O.P.E. Financial Training Center in Charleston, testified on her experience helping South Carolinians increase their financial literacy. Click to watch the hearing Chairman Casey and I also released a report titled "Financial Literacy in Retirement," which examines the financial information and assistance that older Americans need as they face changes in life. An American Victory The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) handed the American people a huge victory this week by blocking President Biden’s unconstitutional vaccine mandate on private businesses. This wrong-headed mandate forced millions of people out of the workforce, further burdening our economy at a time when it needed help the most. I’m reassured by the court’s decision and will continue to champion commonsense, constructive solutions to increase opportunity and support our nation’s economic recovery. Read my full statement on the SCOTUS ruling here. “The Story” with Martha MacCallum Earlier this week, I joined Fox News to discuss the Biden administration’s other COVID-19 blunders as well as President Biden’s disingenuous “election reform” push. In his speech on Tuesday, the president continued to deny the racial progress our country has made. As a Black southerner whose family actually lived through the Jim Crow era, I found his rhetoric insulting. Click below for more of my thoughts! Click to watch Sincerely, |
