Reddit Finally Bans Hate Speech and Trump Community /r/The_Donald

Good morning,

Hope your week is OK so far. It's been a busy one so far over at ol' Adweek dot com.

Reddit came out and outright banned hate speech on its website on Monday. The move represented a hard-fought battle to get executives to ban the hateful content. Previously, its rules only banned content that encouraged or incited violence or material that threatened, harassed or bullied.

In doing so, the company pulled down "/r/The_Donald," the subreddit devoted to President Donald Trump.

Even in recent years, the company has flipped flopped on how it has felt. As a sampling:

  • November 2017: Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman says that r/The_Donald was a "small part of a large problem we face in this country... the last thing we're going to do is take their voice away.”
  • 2018: Huffman says racism is not banned from the platform.
  • 2020: Reddit bans hate speech. "I have struggled with balancing my values as an American and around free speech and free expression with my values and the company’s values around common human decency," Huffman said last week.

Here's Nover's full write-up.

Elsewhere, our team reported on how Rubicon Project went through a rebrand (click for new name), TikTok was among apps banned in India (among other platforms used as communication tools) and Americans trust the CDC more than they do President Trump to give accurate Covid-19 information (here's the story).
