Relationship is a process of self-revelation

"In relationship, the primary cause of friction is oneself: the self that is the center of unified craving. If we can realize that it is not how another acts that is of primary importance, but how each one of us acts and reacts, and that if that reaction and action can be fundamentally, deeply understood—then relationship will undergo a deep and radical change. In this relationship with another, there is not only the physical problem but also that of thought and feeling on all levels, and one can be harmonious with another only when one is harmonious integrally in oneself. In relationship the important thing to bear in mind is not the other but oneself, which does not mean that one must isolate oneself, but understand deeply in oneself the cause of conflict and sorrow. So long as we depend on another for our psychological wellbeing—intellectually or emotionally—that dependence must inevitably create fear from which arises sorrow.

To understand the complexity of relationship there must be thoughtful patience and earnestness. Relationship is a process of self-revelation in which one discovers the hidden causes of sorrow. This self-revelation is only possible in relationship.

I am laying emphasis on relationship because in comprehending deeply its complexity, we are creating an understanding that transcends reason and emotion. If we base our understanding merely on reason then there is isolation, pride, and lack of love in it, and if we base our understanding merely on emotion, then there is no depth in it; there is only a sentimentality that soon evaporates, and no love. From this understanding only can there be completeness of action. This understanding is impersonal and cannot be destroyed. It is no longer at the behest of time. If we cannot bring forth understanding from the everyday problems of greed and of our relationship, then to seek such understanding and love in other realms of consciousness is to live in ignorance and illusion."

Excerpt from On Relationship
J. Krishnamurti

Dear Friends,

Krishnamurti is pointing towards the significance of understanding oneself. He moves the focus away from how others act and instead urges us to look at the actions and reactions in ourselves. The deep understanding he speaks of comes from comprehending the complexity of relationship, because self-revelation is only possible in relationship. Without understanding ourselves we are dependent on others, ultimately creating fear and sorrow. His words shine a light on understanding the crisis humanity faces, and points towards an action beyond what thought is capable of.

Our next online program Can One Live Totally Honestly? occurs December 13 - 17. The program will explore honesty in our everyday existence. In-person dialogues in the Library will also continue on Wednesdays and every 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Saturday of the month.

The Krishnamurti Online Radio has been streaming the series of seminars titled I am the Rest of Mankind. Click here to stream the third of five seminars called â€œCan Thought See Itself?” and join us as we inquire together. The times are Saturday, November 13 at 9AM Los Angeles Time / 5PM London Time / 12PM (noon) Toronto Time / 9:30PM New Delhi Time.

We have the potential to create an understanding in ourselves beyond reason or emotion from which complete action arises. Because of the reliable generosity of donors, a non-profit charity like the Foundation is able to sustain its efforts to preserve and disseminate the teachings. Thank you for your consideration in supporting our Annual Appeal so we can provide opportunities for living inquiry and self-exploration.

Sincerely,

 Jaap Sluijter

Can One Live Totally Honestly?
Online Program
December 13-17, 2021

In this online program, we are going to be looking at honesty in our everyday existence. We might have an explicit desire to be honest and straightforward people on the one hand, and an inherent, implicit tendency to conceal psychologically on the other. Krishnamurti asks, "Honesty is a very complex affair. When one says to oneself that one must be honest, is that possible?"
