Voornaam,

Today marks a somber anniversary as we observe 20 years since the attacks on September 11th, 2001.

Today, we're thinking of the 2,977 victims of those heinous attacks. We’re thinking of the first responders who worked in the poisonous debris of the fallen towers, many of whom now suffer debilitating illness or have died because of their heroic efforts in the weeks and months that followed. We're thinking of the families, friends, and loved ones of those who were motivated to enlist in the wake of 9/11 and who gave their lives in service. And we're thinking of all those across America and around the world whose lives were indelibly changed by that September day.

For the first time, Americans will observe this anniversary without troops stationed in Afghanistan. The longest war in American history came to an end on August 31st, after one of the biggest airlifts in history evacuated more than 120,000 people. This operation was not without tragedy, and we remember the 13 American servicemembers who made the ultimate sacrifice while saving the lives of others. Most of them were just children when the U.S. launched its war in Afghanistan. As President Biden remarked, he was unwilling to send another generation of Americans to fight a war that should have ended long ago.

Twenty years ago, we bore witness to astonishing acts of bravery and heroism from first responders and ordinary Americans from all walks of life. Today, as we take time and make space for ourselves and each other to observe and remember the events of September 11th, 2001, let us strive for the unity we all felt swell through our tears and shock. Let us resolve to honor the lives lost and reaffirm our shared responsibilities to protect and look out for one another.

Thank you,

KC Hanson
