Note to editors

Dr Urbani was an Italian physician and microbiologist and the first to identify severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003, a highly transmissible, lethal and at the time unknown respiratory infection.

He successfully convinced the authorities in Viet Nam to adopt exceptional safety measures, including isolating suspected cases, use of protective measures by medical personnel and others, which with WHO coordination were extended to the region, thus slowing the pace of the epidemic in its earliest stage.

Dr Urbani died of SARS on 29 March 2003.

On 5 July 2003, WHO declared that SARS had been successfully contained.
