Jan. 11, 2022 Minnesota has set a new one-day record for new COVID cases, topping the previous high by nearly 10 percent. State Department of Health data shows the agency received confirmations of more than 11,000 COVID cases in a single day for the first time ever — although delays in processing tests means the peak actually dates back more than a week. But the data that is now substantially complete shows 11,217 cases were confirmed on Jan. 3, the day after the New Year holiday weekend as people headed back to school and work. That's above the previous peak in the pandemic, set during the Thanksgiving holiday in 2020. The data suggests COVID cases are rising across the entire state. Hospitalizations are still below Minnesota’s record set more than a year ago but have begun to rise.
