The Jim Crow laws of the old South affected every aspect of Black life. Nowhere was their presence more felt than at the ballot box, where generations of Black voters were systematically disenfranchised. With the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Congress erased the worst of them and put several of the worst offenders' election laws under federal scrutiny.

But since 2013, a key part of the act has lied dormant. Now Republicans are using "voter fraud" claims to take Jim Crow on a nationwide tour, Hayes Brown writes. "Some of these states — like Idaho, Iowa, and Pennsylvania — were never part of the Voting Rights Act’s formula," Brown writes. "They were never part of the systemic disenfranchisement of nonwhite voters that the South spent years propping up. And yet here they are, doing their best impression of that system."
