Yesterday, I shared Brigham Tomco’s reporting from Montreal on Utah’s trade mission to Canada. Today, Brigham reports on the latest and asks: What role will Utah’s critical minerals play in this trade war? A Canadian think tank found that Utah is the best place in the world for mining investment. With China’s export ban on critical minerals, Utah’s minerals could be key for the U.S. “In 2023, Utah exports to Canada totaled $1.7 billion and Utah imports from Canada totaled $3 billion, according to U.S. Census Bureau data compiled by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute,” Brigham writes.
“With 25% tariffs cutting into Canada’s place as America’s top foreign source of iron, aluminum and metal processing — and with retaliatory measures from China blocking U.S. access to a slew of critical minerals — the turbulence of a trade war could provide an opportunity for Utah’s mining and energy sectors to expand.” Read more about how the trade war will affect Utah-Canada trade. | | Utah welcomed several high-profile visitors yesterday, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., U.S. Health and Human Services secretary; Lee Zeldin, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrator; and Sean Duffy, U.S. Secretary of Transportation. Amy Joi O’Donoghue reports that RFK Jr. and Zeldin were in town to celebrate three new laws passed during the 2025 General Session of the Utah Legislature: HB81, which banned the addition of fluoride to public drinking water HB402, which prohibits adding dyes to food served in schools HB403, which prohibits the purchase of candy and soda with SNAP benefits These policies fall under the broad umbrella of Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy” initiative. Read more about what Kennedy said during his visit to Utah. Also: Read more here about Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s visit. | Jason Swensen writes: The abundant, service-driven life of Mia Love — a pioneering stateswoman who aptly served a state defined by its pioneer legacy — was celebrated and honored Monday at her public memorial service. The former Utah congresswoman died March 23 following a three-year battle with glioblastoma multiforme, a type of brain cancer. She was 49. Hundreds of family members, friends and fellow lawmakers gathered for Monday’s funeral service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Institute of Religion on the University of Utah campus. The gathering doubled as a reminder that Love was many things to many people. For the history books, she will forever be remembered as the first Black Republican woman in the U.S. House of Representatives. But for her loved ones, neighbors and associates in the oft-times pugilistic world of politics, Love was much more. She was a mother, wife, grandmother, sister, daughter, fellow disciple and, for many, “a best friend.” Read more about how Love's friends and family celebrated her optimism and belief in the American Dream.
