We want our families to be safe. And while that’s a natural desire (the small suburban town I live in boasts one of the lowest crime rates in Massachusetts), we can easily slip into idolizing security as we seek to control the uncontrollable.
As believers, our hope rests in Christ alone. He is the one who determines the outcomes—and he commands us to be good neighbors. We aren’t called to self-protection but to hospitality, to advocacy, to love.
Bonnie Kristian’s “In Christ, It’s ‘Yes In My Backyard’” offers a counter-point to our desire to control. My hope is that it reminds us where our truest security lies.
