Welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for Thursday, April 14. It's been a slow week at Saints camp -- the proverbial calm before the storm of NFL Draft preparations. Saints coaches have been on vacation all week and will return to the office to begin final prep work for the April 28-30 draft. So there's not much happening on Airline Drive. You know it's a slow news day when the USFL is making more headlines than the NFL. But that was the case on Wednesday. However, two of the stories had Saints ties. First off, Saints defensive end Cam Jordan has made no bones about his interest in pursuing a broadcast career after his playing days are done. So it's no surprise that he has landed an analyst gig with NBC Sports to work on their USFL broadcasts next winter. Patrick Magee has the story. One of the coaches Jordan will be covering is former Saints head coach Jim Haslett, who was named one of the USFL's eight head coaches on Wednesday. We'll learn what team Haslett will coach at a future date, Magee reports. From the In Case You Missed It file, beat reporter Luke Johnson is attempting to read the tea leaves on the Saints' offseason game plan. Are they in win-now mode? Or are they preparing for the future? Or is it both? Remember that picks trade with the Philadelphia Eagles? I opined about the deal and tried to lend some insight into the strategy behind it. The deal with Philly gives the Saints some flexibility and also adds some intrigue to the upcoming NFL Draft. Stay tuned later this week as our Saints beat coverage team ramps up coverage for the NFL Draft. Cheers, and until next time, Jeff Duncan |
