| How to Plan a Picnic or Hike in the Mountains |
Greetings! Last fall, just after the first snow storm in the mountains, Merri Ann and I hiked up Indian Creek on the Idaho-Wyoming border. The trees were cloaked with a powdery snow and the peaks had turned white. It was gorgeous; maybe the best hike of the season.
This weekend, Merri Ann and I revisited Indian Creek. Our timing was perfect--great weather, the meadows were carpeted in wildflowers, everything was green and lush, and the waters were crystal clear. In the high country, it's still spring.
Get yourself a couple maps and go exploring. Take the kids on a hike, let them throw rocks in the water, and stop to watch a squirrel or a deer.
Teach the kids to love nature--it will be a blessing and refuge all their lives. Help them engage with the details, the wildflowers, point out a scar from an avalanche, let the kids wade in the creek. You'll find plenty to do.
If you go, consider taking these: Crackers and cheese. I'll choose a wax-enclosed Gouda. The wax pack will protect it from rough handling and bacteria. Either a pasta or a potato salad. The mayonnaise will be safe as longs as we keep the bags cold.Sandwich wraps. Unlike bread, the tortillas can take a beating. Fruit, either apples or oranges.
