The original icon was brought from the Basilica of St. Mary Major (The Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore) where it normally resides. Salus Populi Romani means Protectress and Health of the Roman People.

SALUS POPULI ROMANI MOSAIC PLAQUE This Byzantine icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus is a copy of the highly venerated ancient image of Mary that hangs in the basilica of St. Mary Major, in Rome and dates back to before the year 590 AD when it first arrived in Rome. The title "Salus Populi Romani" means Protectress and Health of the Roman People.
